PROCLAMATION.

WHEREAS by writs directed to the Returning
Officers for the election of Members of the
Provincial Council of the Province of Auckland, the
time limited for the return of such writs was the
sixth day of December, one thousand eight hundred
and sixty-nine: And whereas by the thirty-second
section of an Act of the General Assembly of New
Zealand, intituled "The Regulation of Elections
Act, 1858," after reciting that unforeseen difficulties
and delays may arise in carrying into effect the
several provisions in the said Act contained, it is
enacted that within the period of forty days before
or after the day appointed for the holding of any
election, it shall be lawful for the Governor in
Council to extend the time allowed for the holding
of any election or for the return of the writ
issued for the same, notwithstanding the day
may have passed on which such writ shall be return-
able, and to adopt or cause to be adopted such
measures as may be necessary to remove any obstacle
of a technical or formal nature by which the due
course of any such election may be impeded, and to
supply any deficiency that may otherwise affect the
same: And whereas by "The Provincial Elections
Act, 1858," it is enacted that all the provisions of
"The Regulation of Elections Act, 1858," shall
apply to the elections of Superintendents and
Members of Provincial Councils: And whereas it is
expedient that the time for the holding of the said
elections and for the return of the said writs should
be extended:

Now, therefore, His Excellency the Governor, by
and with the advice and consent of the Executive
Council of New Zealand, doth hereby extend the
time allowed for the holding of the said elections
until the eighteenth day of January, one thousand
eight hundred and seventy, and with the like advice
and consent doth hereby extend the time allowed for
the return of the writs issued for such elections until
the eighteenth day of January, one thousand eight
hundred and seventy.

Given under the hand of His Excellency Sir
George Ferguson Bowen, Knight Grand
Cross of the Most Distinguished Order
of Saint Michael and Saint George,
Governor and Commander-in-Chief in
and over Her Majesty's Colony of New
Zealand and its Dependencies, and Vice-
Admiral of the same; and issued under
the Seal of the said Colony, at Auckland,
this fifteenth day of November, in the
year of our Lord one thousand eight
hundred and sixty-nine.

WHEREAS by the one hundred and thirty-third
section of an Act of the General Assembly of
New Zealand, intituled "The Municipal Corporations
Act, 1867," it is enacted that it shall be the duty of
the Town Clerk of every borough, as soon as con-
veniently may be after every election of a Mayor for
such borough, to give notice to the Colonial Secretary
for the time being of such election, and of the person
elected; and it shall be lawful for the Governor, if he
shall think fit, and if such person shall not then be a
Justice of the Peace, by warrant under his hand
published in the New Zealand Gazette, to appoint
such person to be a Justice of the Peace for the
Colony; and it is also thereby enacted that in every
such appointment it shall be expressed that it is made
under the one hundred and thirty-third section of
the said Act; and it is further declared that such
appointment shall continue in force only during
the Mayoralty of such person, and the person so
appointed shall not, by virtue of such appointment,
be authorized to sit or act as a Justice of the Peace
elsewhere than within the borough:

Now therefore I, Sir George Ferguson Bowen,
the Governor of the Colony of New Zealand, in
