A PROCLAMATION.

WHEREAS by "The Supreme Court Act, 1860,"
it is enacted that it shall be lawful for the
Governor in Council, from time to time, to divide the
Colony into Judicial Districts for the purposes of
the said Act, and the limits of such districts from
time to time to alter as occasion may require :

And whereas by a Proclamation bearing date the
twenty-sixth day of February, 1861, the Colony was
divided into three districts, to be called respectively
"The Northern District," "The Middle District,"
and "The Southern District:"

And whereas by a Proclamation bearing date the
twenty-third day of April, 1863, the said Southern
District was, for the purposes of the said Act, further
divided into two districts, to be called respectively
"The Canterbury District" and "The Otago and
Southland District:"

And whereas by a Proclamation bearing date the
twelfth day of October, 1865, three new districts,
called respectively "The Canterbury District," "The
Westland District," and "The Middle District," were
formed and constituted:

And whereas by a Proclamation bearing date the
twenty-sixth day of October, 1867, the said Middle
District was divided into two districts, called respec-
tively "The Wellington District" and "The Nelson
District:" And whereas by the said Proclamation
of the twelfth day of October, 1865, the Canterbury
District was assigned to Henry Barnes Gresson,
Esquire, a Judge of the Supreme Court: And
whereas by the said Proclamation of the twenty-
sixth day of October, 1867, the Nelson District and
the Westland District were assigned to Christopher
William Richmond, Esquire, a Judge of the Supreme
Court: And whereas it is expedient to alter the
limits of the said Canterbury District, and of the
said Nelson District and Westland District:

Now therefore I, Sir George Ferguson Bowen, the
Governor of New Zealand, in pursuance of the power
and authority for this purpose vested in me under
and by virtue of the said Act, do hereby, by and with
the advice and consent of the Executive Council of
New Zealand, proclaim and declare that all that
portion of the Colony bounded as follows, namely:-

On the South, by the Province of Otago from the
mouth of the Waitaki River to the summit of the
dividing range between the East and West Coasts,
near Mount Aspiring; on the West, by the Water-
shed between the East and West Coasts to the
summit of Mount Humboldt; on the North, by a
straight line from the summit of Mount Humboldt to
the point at which the Clarence River flows out of
Lake Tennyson, and by the south bank of the Clarence
River to the Sea; and on the East by the Sea Coast;
shall be and the same is hereby constituted a
Judicial District for the purposes of the said Act,
and shall be called "The Canterbury District;" and
that all that portion of the Colony comprised within
the Westland District, as defined by the said Pro-
clamation of the twelfth day of October, 1865,
except such part thereof as is hereby included
in the Canterbury District, shall be and the
same is hereby constituted a Judicial District for
the purposes of the said Act, and shall be called
"The Westland District;" and that all that portion
of the Colony comprised within the Nelson District,
as defined by the said Proclamation of the twenty-
sixth day of October, 1867, except such part thereof
as is hereby included in the Canterbury District,
shall be and the same is hereby constituted a
Judicial District for the purposes of the said Act,
and shall be called "The Nelson District."

And in further pursuance of the power and

authority vested in me by the said Act, I do hereby,.
by and with the advice and consent aforesaid,
proclaim and declare that I assign the said Canter-
bury District to Henry Barnes Gresson, Esquire, a
Judge of the Supreme Court; and the said Westland
District and the said Nelson District to Christopher
William Richmond, Esquire, a Judge of the Supreme
Court. And that Circuit Courts shall be holden for
the Canterbury, Westland, and Nelson Districts, as
hereby constituted, at the times and places heretofore
appointed for the holding of Circuit Courts in the
Canterbury District, the Westland District, and the
Nelson District respectively, as existing immediately
before the date of this Proclamation.

Given under the hand of His Excellency Sir
George Ferguson Bowen, Knight Grand
Cross of the Most Distinguished Order
of Saint Michael and Saint George,
Governor and Commander-in-Chief in
and over Her Majesty's Colony of New
Zealand and its Dependencies, and Vice-
Admiral of the same, at the Government
House, at Auckland; and issued under
the Seal of the said Colony, this second
day of November, in the year of our
Lord one thousand eight hundred and
sixty-nine.

A PROCLAMATION.

WHEREAS by "The Gold Fields Act, 1866," it
enacted that it shall be lawful for the Governor
in Council, by Proclamation in the New Zealand
Gazette, to declare that, on and from a day named in
such Proclamation, the provisions of the twenty-first
section and sub-sections respectively of the said Act
shall be extended to any Gold Field which may be
proclaimed after the passing of the said Act; and
the same shall be extended accordingly :

And whereas by a Proclamation of the Superin-
tendent of the Province of Otago, published on the
sixth day of May, 1868, and by two Orders in Council
of the said Superintendent, published respectively on
the fifteenth day of September and the twenty-second
day of September, 1869, the areas in the Province of
Otago described in the Schedule hereto were respec-
tively proclaimed Gold Fields under the said Act:

Now therefore I, Sir George Ferguson Bowen,
the Governor of New Zealand, by and with the
advice and consent of the Executive Council of the
Colony, and in pursuance and exercise of the power
in me vested by the said Act, do hereby declare that
on and from the twentieth day of November, one
thousand eight hundred and sixty-nine, the provi-
sions contained in the said twenty-first section of the
said Act, and the sub-sections thereof respectively,
shall be extended to the areas so proclaimed Gold
Fields as aforesaid, and described in the Schedule
following, that is to say-

SCHEDULE.

All that area bounded towards the North-west by
a line proceeding from Mount Ida to Kurow Moun-
tain; thence towards the North and East by a line
proceeding from Kurow Mountain over Little
Domett Peak to Kakanui Peak, and towards the
South and West by the boundary of the present
Gold Field to Mount Ida, the starting point.

All that area situate in the Province of Otago, con--
taining by estimation one hundred and forty-five-
