NOTES.
Mongonui. Stormy weather at this station from S.W. during the month, especially on the 9th, 17th, 19th, and 28th. The rain-
fall was much below the average. Thunder and fog on 1st, and hail and thunder on 19th. Fourteen days of S.W. wind.
Auckland. Showery and squally weather generally, though there were some very fine bright days. The temperature was rather
lower than usual at this time of the year. Hail fell on 9th and 30th. The prevailing wind from S.W.
Wellington.-Severe storm from S.E. on 19th instant, with rain, which abated on morning of 20th; also wet stormy weather on
27th, commencing from N.W. and changing to S.E.; hail storms on 10th and 12th. Although the weather was very
pleasant at times, yet the rainfall and wind were above the average. Earthquakes occurred on the 4th, three shocks,
between 12-30 and 2-25 a.m.,-the last was sharp, lasting ten seconds; also slight shock on 26th, at 7.15 a.m. Prevailing
wind N.W.
Nelson.-Dull, heavy, wet weather during the month; unusually heavy rainfall. A hail storm on 6th, wind N. At 2:30 a.m.,
on 4th, smart shock of earthquake. Prevailing wind N.E.
Christchurch. Very fine weather at this station. Slight rainfall and light winds. Fog on 21st. Prevailing wind from S.W.
Hokitika. Gale from N.E. on 24th, with rain, also strong wind on 26th, from same quarter, and rain; severe thunder and
lightning during night of 4th. Fog on 8th. The rainfall for the month was heavy, yet the weather was at times very
pleasant. Prevailing wind S.E.
Bealey. Occasionally fine, clear weather, with light winds, though on the whole it was dull and showery. There was thunder
on 26th; snow on 11th, 18th, and 19th; and hail on 16th. Prevailing wind from N.W.
Dunedin. Very fine pleasant weather, rainfall and wind below the average. Snow storm on 12th, from S.W.; foggy on 1st.
Prevailing wind from W.
Southland. The Observer remarks-A remarkably fine, mild month. On 27th, thermometer rose to 69° in shade, the highest
ever recorded at this station in August. Small rainfall; light winds. Stormy on 10th and 11th, from W. and N.W.,
with hail, rain, snow, and thunder. Fog on 4th. Prevailing wind N.W.
GENERAL REMARKS.
Unusually fine steady weather during this month on the East and South of the Colony. On the West Coast and in the
North, stormy, with prevalent westerly winds. The average rainfall for the whole Colony is that usual for this month; but the
distribution was very unequal, being excessive on the West Coast.
