- Wellington.—On 1st November the Instruments were removed to the Museum grounds, 30 feet lower than the former site.
† Hokitika.—Wind-gauge out of order from 14th to 23rd.
NOTES.
Mongonui.—Thunder on the 14th and 15th, and lightning without thunder on 17th. Nothing unusual occurred at this station during this month.
Auckland.—Strong wind from S.W. on 1st and 2nd; also on 14th, from N., with heavy rain; and on 15th, from W.; on 21st and 22nd, violent squalls from W., with showers; on 25th and 26th, strong S.W. gales, with rain; thunder on 16th, and hail on 22nd, 23rd, and 28th. Not much rain during the month. Shocks of earthquake experienced on the 1st, 6th, 8th, 9th, and 18th—all slight but that on the 8th, which was smart.
Napier.—Strong winds on 21st and 22nd from N. and N.W. Fine weather, though rather stormy at times; very slight rain.
Wellington.—Strong gale on 20th from N.E., and on the 21st, from N.W.; stormy on 24th from N.W., and S.E. on 25th; hail on the 17th, and fog on 28th. Not much rain during the month.
Nelson.—Very slight rainfall at this station, and altogether fine weather.
Christchurch.—Storm from E. on 9th, and on 15th, from N., with rain; stormy and wet weather from S.W. on 16th and 17th, with rain; hail on 16th; strong E. wind on 21st, and on 22nd, stormy, from W.; stormy on 25th and 26th, from S.W., with rain and hail on 30th, blowing hard from N.W.; lightning only on 14th and 24th; fourteen days of east wind. Stormy weather at this station.
Hokitika.—Gale from N.W. on 24th, with rain; thunder on 14th, with rain; fog on 4th, 5th, 6th, 14th, and 19th; hail on the 22nd. On the whole, tolerably fine weather during the month; rain below the average.
Dunedin.—On 1st, stormy, from W.; on 22nd, S.W. gale; and on 30th, strong W. wind; fog on 10th; rainfall considerably below the average.
Southland.—Very high winds from W. and N.W., on 22nd, 23rd, and 24th, with rain; thunder on 14th, 22nd, 23rd, and 24th; very fine and dry until the 14th, when a heavy thunder-storm occurred with 1.17 inches of rain, and the remainder of the month was stormy and changeable, with much hail, rain, thunder, lightning, and high winds; rather a high mean temperature.
GENERAL REMARKS.
On the whole, the weather throughout the Colony has been very unpleasant during this month, severe storms having occurred at many places, with thunder, rain, and hail; the total rainfall is, however, considerably below the average.
