THE following Report from the Examiners ap-
pointed to decide on the comparative merits of
forty-two Gold Fields Essays, received in pursuance
of the Notice in the New Zealand Gazette, dated
31st of December last, is published for general
information.

The names corresponding to the mottoes in respect
of which the several premiums have been adjudged
are as follows:—

  1. First Prize, £50:— "Striving to better oft we
    mar what's well," Robert H. Eyton, Parnell
    Auckland.
  2. Second Prize, £30:— "Carpe diem," F. W.
    Hutton, Auckland,
  3. Third Prize, £20:— "Ubi mel ibi apes," E. T.
    Gillon, Wellington.

All the Essays, together with the unopened enve-
lopes containing the other Mottoes, will be laid
before the House of Representatives.

SIR, —The Examiners appointed to decide upon
the merits of the Gold Fields Essays, after fully
considering those laid before them to the number of
forty-two, decide as follows:—They consider that
No. 41 in the Schedule, bearing the motto "Striving
to better oft we mar what's well," is entitled to the
first prize. That No. 26, with the motto "Carpe
diem," is entitled to the second prize; and that No.
23, with the motto "Ubi mel ibi apes," is entitled to
the third prize.

The above conclusions were fully arrived at by a
majority of the Examiners.

Herbert Samuel Wardell, Esq.: Wairarapa East
and Wairarapa West.
Walter Lawry Buller, Esq.: Manawatu, Rangitiki,
Wangaehu, Wanganui Town, Waitotara and
Kai Iwi.
