NOTES.
Mongonui.—High wind from N.E. on the 24th, and heavy rain; very strong gale from S.W. on the 28th; lightning on the 12th,
but no thunder. Unusually heavy rainfall at this station, 2.65 inches recorded on 25th for previous twenty-four hours;
during the latter part of the month very stormy weather.

Auckland.—As will be seen from the above table, the rainfall at this place has been unusually great, and storms of great violence
have occurred during the month. The Observer remarks, "On the afternoon of the 9th rain commenced and continued
without cessation till 8 a.m. on the 12th, the quantity registered being on 10th, 1.743; 11th, 6.392; and 12th, 0.860 inches,
attended with thunder and vivid lightning, but little wind. There was a violent gale on 20th from E., which changed to
N.E. and abated on night of 24th; 1.588 inch of rain recorded on morning of 24th. Another severe storm took place on
27th, commencing from E.; barometer fell from 29.831 on 26th to 29.207 on morning of 27th, there was very heavy rain;
on afternoon of 27th there was a lull in the storm, and wind changed suddenly to W., when it blew with greater fury than
ever during evening and night; on 28th it moderated."

Taranaki.—Gale on 14th from N.W., with rain, and from 15th to 17th stormy weather from S.E.; thunder on the 1st, 2nd, 3rd,
and 6th. The rainfall was heavy also at this station. There were four days of fog.

Napier.—Strong wind on 16th from S., no rain, and on the 23rd from N.E., also without rain; thunder and lightning on 3rd.
Very heavy rainfall, particularly on the 10th (1.75 inch for previous twenty-four hours); on 11th (1.54 inch); on 27th (2.12
inches); and 28th (2.78 inches). Slight earthquake on 11th at 10.30 a.m., and on 27th at 11 p.m.

Wellington.—Strong wind on 14th from S.E.; severe gale on 27th and 28th from same quarter, with heavy rain on 27th, 1.800
inch in twenty-four hours; foggy also on 27th; sixteen days of S.E. wind; slight earthquake on the 11th. On the whole,
disagreeable and wet weather at this station.

Nelson.—The weather at this station during the month has been fine; rainfall below the average, and wind moderate; smart
shock of earthquake at 10.13 a.m. on 11th.

Christchurch.—Strong E. wind on 24th, and on 28th stormy from S.W., with heavy rain; thunder-storm on the 6th; slight
earthquake on 11th at 10.15 a.m.; fine during the early part of the month, but rough and wet towards the end.

Hokitika.—Gale on 23rd and 24th from N.E., with rain and thunder and lightning on 24th; also gale on 25th from S.W. Up
to the 22nd the weather was on the whole fine; slight shock of earthquake on 11th at 10.14 a.m.

Dunedin.—Very fine weather during the month, light winds and small rainfall; high barometer readings; fog on 18th.

Southland.—Observer remarks that this was a very fine, dry, and calm month, no gales, hail, or fog; thunder on the 5th, and
slight earthquake on 10th at 3 a.m.

GENERAL REMARKS.

Several storms of great violence have occurred at most of the stations in the North Island during this month, particularly at
Auckland, and the rainfall in every case is considerably greater than the average for previous years. The rain in Auckland on
the 11th (6.329 inches), and the force of the wind on the 28th for previous twenty-four hours (1,229 miles), exceed greatly any
previous daily records in that Province. The weather in the South has been on the whole fine, with slight rain.
