NOTICE TO MARINERS.
Change in Channel over Bar of Hokianga River.
Harbour Office,
Auckland, 15th February, 1867.
NOTICE is hereby given that the channel over the bar
at the entrance of Hokianga River (as laid down in
Captain Drury's survey) has lately shoaled to seven
(7) feet at low water, and is no longer safe to enter.
The proper entrance now for vessels is by a new
channel, which has opened about two (2) cables'
length to the southward of the old one, having a
breadth of one and a half (1) cables' length, and a
depth of eighteen (18) feet at low water. The mark
for entering the same is to bring the flagstaff (on
South Head) to bear N.E. by E. E., and be further
guided by a white square at the yard-arms of the
flagstaff, which hoisted at the south yard-arm,
denotes "Keep more to the southward;" and when
hoisted at the north yard-arm, "Keep more to the
northward;" both squares down, denote "Steer as
you go."
Two beacons will, within a short time, be erected
on the South Head, as leading marks for crossing the
bar.

Port Master.
