A PROCLAMATION.

WHEREAS by an Act of the General Assembly
of New Zealand intituled "The New Zealand
Post Office Act, 1858," it is enacted that it shall be
lawful for the Governor in Council, from time to time,
by Proclamation to be published in the New Zealand
Gazette, to fix, alter, and abolish the rates of Postage
at any time payable within the Colony for the trans-
mission of letters and newspapers by post, either
between places within New Zealand, or to or from
places beyond seas, and at what time the same shall
be paid, and that the postage so made payable shall
be charged and paid accordingly; and whereas by a
Proclamation duly made and issued, bearing date the
twenty-ninth day of December, one thousand eight
hundred and sixty, the Governor in Council did, in
pursuance of the said recited power and authority,
fix certain rates of postage, and the times at which
the same respectively should be paid; and whereas
by a Proclamation duly made and issued, bearing date
the twenty-third day of May, one thousand eight
hundred and sixty-six, the Governor in Council did,
in further exercise of the said recited power and
authority, alter the rates of postage for the transmis-
sion of all letters, newspapers, and packets by post
via Panama to or from the countries mentioned in the
Schedule to such Proclamation, and fix such rates of
postage according to the rates mentioned in such
Schedule; and whereas it is expedient to alter the
rates so fixed, and to substitute other rates in lieu
thereof:

Now therefore, in exercise of the said recited power
and authority, I, Sir George Grey, Governor of New
Zealand, with the advice and consent of the Executive
Council thereof, do hereby alter the rates of postage
payable within the Colony for the transmission of all
letters, newspapers, and packets by post via Panama
hereto, and in lieu thereof do fix the rates of postage
so payable according to the rates mentioned in the
following Schedule; and do hereby proclaim and
declare that such alteration and substitution shall take
effect from and after the twenty-sixth day of June,
one thousand eight hundred and sixty-six.

Given under the hand of His Excellency Sir
George Grey, Knight Commander of
the Most Honorable Order of the Bath,
Governor and Commander-in-Chief in
and over Her Majesty's Colony of New
Zealand and its Dependencies, at the
Government House, at Wellington, and
issued under the seal of the Colony this
twenty-sixth day of June, in the year of
our Lord, one thousand eight hundred and
sixty-six.

The Continent of Europe, via the United Kingdom LETTERS, BOOK PACKETS, and REGISTRATION FEES to be charged the same rates as those in force when transmitted by the route via Suez and Southampton
France LETTERS.-10d. under 1/4 oz.; 1s. 2d. under 1/2 oz.; 2s. under 3/4 oz.; 2s. 4d. under 1 oz.; and so on increasing at the rate of 1s. Colonial Postage for every additional ounce; and 4d. Foreign Postage for every additional 1/4 ounce or fraction of 1/4 ounce ... 1s. under 1/4 oz. and 4d. for every 1/4 oz. in addition One Penny each
Ditto BOOK PACKETS.-7d. under 4 oz.; 1s. 2d. under 8 oz.; and 1s. 2d. for every additional 8 oz. or fraction of 8 oz. One Penny in addition to the existing rates Twopence each
