β¨ Military Report, Resignations, Companies
264
SIR,---I am compelled by want of paper, to continue
my report of the 3rd instant here, and therefore beg
to inform you that on the 3rd August some of our
natives in searching in the scrub, found a party of
fourteen women and two men, who had fled from the
pa. They accordingly made prisoners of them, and
Mr. Deighton purposes taking the two male prisoners
with him to Napier.
The Chief Te Mokena has since the taking of the
pa, been out in the bush, with a large body of men,
harassing the enemy, and has killed five of them,
besides taking a number of prisoners, who are yet to
come in, and some flags, guns, horses, &c.
Mr. Deighton, who proceeds to Napier by the
"St. Kilda," will doubtless give all the information
on the above points to Mr. McLean.
I trust our successes, slight as they have been, will
be approved of by the Government.
I have, &c.,
JAMES FRASER,
Captain commanding Local Forces, Waiapu.
