The numbers of the Military and their families on the 1st of December, were—Officers and men, 9,136; male children, 933; total males, 10,069. Women, 1,024; female children, 880; total females, 1,904.
Total of the Military and their families, 11,973; making the general total of the European population 183,904, viz., 116,548 males, and 67,356 females.

The numbers of Military Settlers and the Colonial Defence Force, included in the above table, were, in the aggregate, 6,382, viz., 5,139 males, and 1,243 females. Their distribution in the several Provinces
of the Northern Island on the Census night, was :—Auckland : Males, 4,035; females, 1,089; total, 5,124. Taranaki : Males, 969; females, 118; total, 1,087. Wellington: Males, 35; females, 14; total, 49.
Hawke's Bay: Males, 100; females, 22; total, 122. Further information will be found in the next table (No. II.)

No return for the Chatham Islands has yet been received. The European population in 1861 was 50, viz., 27 males and 23 females.
