Donald McLean, Esq., elected Superinten-
dent of Hawke's Bay.

HIS Excelleney the Governor directs it
to be notified that the Speaker of the
Provincial Council of the Province of Hawke's
Bay has reported that
DONALD MCLEAN, Esq.,
has been duly elected Superintendent of that
Province, under the provisions of the "New
Provinces Act, 1858."

IT is hereby notified, that in pursuance of
the provisions of the "Miner's Representa-
tion Act, 1862," His Excellency the Governor
in Council has appointed a stamp bearing the
words "Miner's Franchise Exercised," at each
election as the distinguishing mark or stamp
to be impressed upon every Miner's Right in
respect of which any person shall vote at such
election.

Orders will be issued on and after the
1st of March next, at any Money Order Office
in New Zealand for the transmission of money
to the Colony of South Australia.
Commission will be charged on Money
Orders issued at the following rates. For any
sum s. d.
Not exceeding £5...................... 1 0
Above £5 and not exceeding £10... 2 0
No single Order will be issued for a greater
amount than £10.
Full information as to Forms, &c., will be
supplied to the public on application at any
Money Order Office.

THE following Despatch with its enclosure
respecting the Examinations of Candi-
dates for the Civil Service of India, is published
for general information.

SIR, I have the honour to transmit to you,
at the request of the Civil Service Commission-
ers, the enclosed Regulations for an Examina-
tion of Candidates for the Civil Service of India,
to be held in London in the month of June or
July, 1863.

EXAMINATIONS FOR THE CIVIL
SERVICE OF INDIA.
Regulations.
-
In June or July 1863, an Examination
of candinates will be held in London. Not
less than candidates will be selected,
if so many shall be found duly qualified. Of
these, will be selected for the Presi-
dency of Bengal, for that of Madras,
and for that of Bombay.*-Notice
will hereafter be given of the days and place
of examination. -
Any natural-born subject of Her Majesty,
who shall be desirous of entering the Civil
Service of Iudia, will be entitled to be ex-
amined at such Examination, provided he shall,
on or before the 1st May 1863, have transmitted
to the Civil Service Conmmissioners, Dean's
Yard, London, S.W,-
(a) A certificate of his birth, showing
that his age on the 1st May 1863 will be
above eighteen and under twenty-two years;
(b) A certificate, signed by a physician or
surgeon, of his having no disease, constitu-
tional affection, or bodily infirmity, unfitting
him for the Civil Service of India;
(c) Satisfactory proof of good moral
character;
(d) A statement of those of the branches
of knowledge herein-after enumerated in
which he desires to be examined.

In any case in which a doubt may arise
as to the eligibility of a candidate in respect of
age, health, or character, such inquiries as may
be necessary will be instituted by the Civil
Service Commissioners. -
The Examination will take place only in
the following branches of knowledge:-
NOTE. It should be understood that candi-
dates are at liberty to name at their pleasure
any or all of these branches of knowledge
(subject only to the restriction above men-
tioned as to natural science) and that no sub-
jects are obligatory.

English Literature and History,
including that of the Laws and

Language, Literature, and History

- The number of appointments to be made, and the
number in each presidency, will be announced hereafter.
