Correspondence respecting publication of a
Manual of New Zealand Flora.

Colonial Secretary's Office,
Auckland, June 22nd, 1863.

THE following correspondence with Dr. J.
D. Hooker, Kew Gardens, respecting
the preparation and publication by him of a
"Manual of New Zealand Flora," is publish-
ed for general information.

ALFRED DOMETT.

New Zealand,
Colonial Secretary's Office,
Auckland, 31st October, 1862.

SIR, -Dr. Knight having represented to
the Government of this Colony that you had
expressed your willingness to prepare for pub-
lication as early as possible, a Manual of the
New Zealand Flora, to be written in English,
for which the sum of three hundred pounds
(£300) would be payable by the Government
to you for the labor thereby devolving on you,
and to purchase one hundred (100) copies on
the day of publication, the Government, fully
sensible of the importance, in the interests of
science of such a work, proposed the necessary
vote to the House of Representatives, who
cheerfully granted it.

It was understood from the information fur-
nished by Dr. Knight that this work was not
originally intended to include the description
of the New Zealand Sea Weeds, and the Gov-
ernment were so impressed with the conviction
that the usefulness of the work would be much
increased by the comprisal of those plants that
they took a vote for five hundred pounds (£500)
in all, being fifty pounds (£50) in excess of
the sum which it was understood would be
necessary to meet the expense of the original
work including the purchase of the one hun-
dred (100) copies above referred to.

Should, however, the sum of five hundred
pound (£500) be insufficient to meet the ex-
pense of the enlarged work, the Government
will undertake to make good the deficiency
providing the extra expense does not altogether
exceed one hundred pounds (£100).

I have, &c,,

F. D. BELL,
For the Colonial Secretary.

J. D. Hooker, Esq., M.D.,
Kew Gardens.

Royal Gardens, Kew,
March 3rd, 1863.

SIR, -I have to acknowledge the receipt of
your letter of October 31st, 1862, informing
me that the Government of New Zealand had
done me the honor of directing that I should
prepare and publish a Manual of the New Zea-
land Flora, and had placed on the estimates a
sum of (£500) to meet the necessary expenses
of authorship, and the purchase of 100 copies
together with the liberal offer of another £100,
should the former sum not be sufficient.
