CUSTOMS.

Appointing a Bonding Warehouse at the
Port of Lyttelton.

Custom House, Lyttelton,
4th March, 1863.

IN virtue of the powers delegated to me by
the Honorable the Commissioner of Her
Majesty's Customs by writing under his hand
dated 4th day of December, 1861, (No. 36) I
do hereby, under the authority of Clause XI. of
the Customs Regulations of 1858, appoint and
direct that all imported goods liable to duty,
excepting sugar, may be warehoused, kept and
secured, without payment of duty upon first entry
thereof, in the licensed Warehouse situated
upon Norwich Quay, at Lyttelton, hitherto
known as "Cookson, Bowler & Co.'s Ware-
house."

Deputy Commissioner.

NOTICE TO MARINERS.

French Pass, Cook's Straits.

Chief Marine Board Office,
Nelson, 16th March, 1863.

AN Iron Perch, 6 ft. above high water
end of the reef in the French Pass, leaving a
clear channel of 117 yards between it and the
eastern shore, and a Buoy, painted white, has
been placed on the eastern edge of Shell Bank
in 2 fathoms at low water spring tides, with
the following bearings and distances:-Rock
Cod Point, E. N., 1Β½ cables; the Iron
Perch, N.E. by N., 2ΒΌ cables.

Masters of vessels going through should take
it with either a fair tide or at slack water, and
in going from the southward should leave the
Buoy and Perch on the port hand, and from
the northward vice versa, in both instances
taking a middle channel course.

Strangers before approaching the narrows
should make themselves perfectly acquainted
with the relative positions of the above as the
tides are strong, leaving too little time for
taking bearings, and should not attempt going
through after dark.

132
The French Pass can only be recommended
for steamers and small coasters.
The bearings are magnetic.
