PROCLAMATION.
Administration of the Government assumed
by Sir George Grey, K.C.B.
By His Excellency Sir GEORGE
GREY, Knight, Commander of
the most Honorable Order of the
Bath, Administrator of the Go-
vernment of the Colony of New
Zealand and its Dependencies,
&c., &c.
W HEREAS by Letters Patent under
the Great Seal of the United King-
dom of Great Britain and Ireland, dated at
Westminster the ninth day of February
one thousand eight hundred and fifty-five,
Her Majesty did constitute and appoint
THOMAS GORE BROWNE, Esquire, Com-
panion of the most Honorable Order of the
Bath, Colonel in the Army, to be Her
Majesty's Governor and Commander-in-Chief
in and over the Colony of New Zealand,
with all its members and appurtenances
whatsoever, with all and singular the powers,
authorities, privileges, and duties in the said
Letters Patent mentioned or referred to.
And Her Majesty did further declare it to be
Her pleasure that in case of the death,
incapacity, or absence of the said THOMAS
GORE BROWNE from the said Colony and its
Dependencies, Her said Commission and
the several powers which thereby and by
certain instructions therein referred to were
vested in the said THOMAS GORE BROWNE
should be exercised by such person as might
be appointed by Her Majesty to be the
Lieutenant Governor of the said Colony, or
by such person as might be appointed by
Her Majesty under Her Sign Manual
and Signet to administer the Government
thereof;
And whereas by a Warrant under the
Royal Sign Manual and Signet, bearing date
at Osborne House, in the Isle of Wight, the
1st day of June, 1861, Her Majesty did
nominate and appoint me, the said Sir
GEORGE GREY, in case of such death, in-
capacity, or absence as aforesaid to administer
the Government of the said Colony and its
Dependencies, and did direct and authorise
me to exercise all such functions, powers,
and authorities as by the said Letters Patent
and Instructions were vested in the said
THOMAS GORE BROWNE or might other-
wise belong to the Officer administering
the Government of the said Colony; and
Her Majesty did command all and sin-
gular Her Officers and Ministers, Civil and
Military, and all other inhabitants of the said
Colony, and all others whom it might con-
cern, to take due notice of Her said Warrant,
and to yield to me their ready obedience as
Administrator of the said Colony of New
Zealand and its Dependencies;
And whereas the said THOMAS GORE
BROWNE sailed for Sydney, in New South
Wales, on the 2nd day of October now
instant, and is now absent from the said
Colony and its Dependencies:
Now, therefore, I, Sir GEORGE GREY, do
hereby proclaim and declare, that I have this
day taken the prescribed Oaths, and assumed
the administration of the Government of the
said Colony of New Zealand and its Depen-
dencies: And I hereby call upon all Officers,
Ministers, Civil and Military, and all other
