4 THE NEW ZEALAND GAZETTE.

Not exceeding an ounce in weight 2d
Exceeding an ounce, not ex- .. 4d
ceeding 1 ounce
And so on, increasing fourpence for every
additional ounce or fraction of an ounce.
- Foreign Letters.
All Postage on Letters addressed to places
beyond the Colony must be prepaid, a uniform
rate (except where otherwise herein specially
provided) according to the following scale:-
Not exceeding an ounce .. 6d
Exceeding an ounce, not ex-
ceeding 1 ounce .. 1s
And so on, increasing one shilling for every
additional ounce or fraction of an ounce.
NOTEβ Letters sent to or by Seamen and
Soldiers in Her Majesty's Service, and in the
service of the East India Company, will be
transmitted within the Colony, an l between
the Colony and any Post Offi e in the British
Dominione, at a charge of Qae Penny; pro-
vided the following regulations are observed,
1st. Each Letter must not exceed half an
ounce in weight.
2nd. It must be superscribed with the name
of the writer, his description or class in the
vessel or regiment, and signed by the officer
at the time in command.
3rd. The Postage must be prepaid.
Any letter of this description posted or
received in the colony, not in accordance with
the foregoing regulations will be treated as an
ofdinary letter.

Special Rates payable on certain Letters
in addition to the ordinary rate of Foreign
Postage of sixpence per half ounce. -
Via Marseilles to the United Kingdom:-
Letters under ounce 3d
One ounce and under an ounce 6d
And so on, increasing three pence for every
additional quarter of an ounce or fraction of
a quarter of an ounce. -
Letters addressed to officers on board any
of Her Majesty's Ships on Foreign Stations
sent through the United Kingdom:-
Not exceeding an ounce .. 6d
Exceeding an ounce and not ex-
ceeding 1 ounce .. 1s
And so on, increasing one shilling for every
additional ounce or fraction of an ounce. -
Letters forwarded, via the United King-
dom, to other colonies and Foreign countries.
Such rates in addition to the ordinary rate
of Foreign Postage as shall from time to time
be fixed by lawful authority in England, and
published in the "New Zealand Government
Gazette."
The Postage upon these Letters must in all
cases be paid in advance.

Continent of Europe via Trieste:-
Letters not exceeding an ounce.. 1s
Exceeding an ounce and not ex-
ceeding 1 ounce .. 2s
Increasing two shillings for every additional
ounce or fraction of an ounce. -
Jerusalem, Baghdad, etc., via Alexan-
dria and Jaffa:-
Letters not exceeding an ounce.. 5d
Exceeding an ounce, not exceed- 10d
ing one ounce
Increasing tenpence for every additional ounce
or fraction of an ounce. -
Registered Letters:-
Uniform Registration Fee, one shilling
besides the postage.
On Letters addressed through the United
Kingdon to certain Colonies and
Foreiga Countries, such additional
fees as shall be fixed by lawful authority
in England, and published in the
"New Zealand Government Gazette."
- Loose Letters:-
This class of Letters to be charged accord-
ing to two different rates: -
1st. Those which it is compulsory by
law to send by post.
2nd. Those which it is not compulsory so to
send.
The first class will bear a charge according
to the postage rates established by the
above tables.
The second class will be a uniform charge
of two pence per ounce.
Newspapers.
-
Posted in New Zealand for any other
part of the Colony; published in the.
Colony and posted within seven days
from the date of Publication Free.
Not published in the Colony, or not
posted within seven days from the
date of publication, (each pre-
paid) .. .. .. Id -
To England, via Southampton, or by
ship direct .. .. .. Free.
To England, via Marseilles (each) 3d -
For transmission to the Continent of
Europe, via Trieste (each) 2s -
Forwarded, via the United Kingdom to
other Colonies and Foreign Countries.
Such rates, in addition to those
specified in section 2, as shall from
time to time be fixed by lawful
authority in England, and published
in the "New Zealand Government
Gazette." -
For Jerusalem, Baghdad, &c., via Alexan-
dria and Jaffa:-
Not exceeding two ounces.. .. ld
And so on, one penny for every two
ounces.
Book Packets.
From one part of the Colony to another,
or to the United Kingdom, via Southampton:
Packet not exceeding four ounces in
weight .. .. .. 4d
Exceeding 4 ounces and not exceeding
eight ounces .. .. 8d
Exceeding 8 ounces and not exceeding one
pound .. .. .. 1s 4d
And so on, increasing eight pence for every
additional half-pound or fraction of half-a-
pound.
