When called out, all Volunteer's liable to serve
94. It is intended that the Naval Volunteer
Reserve Force shall be called out only when an
emergency requires a sudden increase in the
Naval force of the country. In such a case the
Naval Volunteers will be called out by
Royal Proclamation, and all Naval Volunteers
for the time being, belonging to the force, are
liable to serve in the Navy.

Exceptions.
95. Any Naval Volunteer who may be ser-
ving at any place abroad, will be liable to
serve in the Royal Navy if called upon by the
Officer commanding any of Her Majesty's ships
there stationed, unless such Naval Volunteer
can show, by his Certificate R V 2, that he
has obtained leave to go to sea on a long voy-
age without liability to serve abroad.

Officers to co-operate with Naval Officers.
96. Naval Officers commanding Her Majes-
ty's ships in the neighbourhood of the colomal
ports will apply to the Officers who act as Ship-
ping Masters to examine the agreements of
British merchant ships, and to call for any do-
cuments relating to the crew, in order to as-
certain whether any Naval Volunteers are on
board. If any such Naval Volunteers (not
being exempt from liability to serve) are found
the Naval Officer will call on them to join the
Navy, and the Colonial Officer will in all cases
give all the assistance in his power.

Defaulters to be reported.
97. The Officer should report specially any
Volunteers who fail to serve when called on to
do so; also any case in which he has reason to
believe any Naval Volunteer is endeavouring
to evade his liability to serve, or in which he
refuses or neglects to return to the United
Kingdom within the time allowed.

N.B.—A ship from the southward has only
to be placed in 24° south, 157° east, and a
clear passage of 150 miles wide, free of cur-
rent, with a flowing southeast "trade" wind,
will lie before her for the 1,160 miles to Raine
Island entrance, to Torres' Straits, upon the
following courses, viz. :—

1st. N. by W. 3/4 W. 240 miles, to lat. 20°
0' S.

2nd. N.W. 1/2 W. 700 miles, to lat. 11° 36'
S. (parallel of Raine Island.)

3rd. W. 3/4 S. 220 miles, to Raine Island, upon
its parallel.

Note.—The courses are by "compass,"
corrected for the successive changes in "Vari-
ation," in the Coral Sea.

Captain Denham also reports that he caused
such supplies as could be spared from the
"Herald," to be stored in the Tower on
Raine Island.

HIS Excellency the Governor General
directs the publication of the following
table of positions of Reefs in Torres's Straits,
communicated by Captain Denham, and com-
piled from the most recent surveys by H.M.
Ship "Herald," under his command.

Geographic positions of the boundary Reefs
which, on the eastern and western hand,
form the Outer route to Torres' Straits plete,
from the Ports of Australia, Tasmania, and at
New Zealand, as recently determined by
H.M. Ship "Herald," Captain Denham,
R.N., F.R.S.

AUCKLAND WATERWORKS
COMPANY.

NOTICE is hereby given that application
will be made to the General Assembly at
the next Session thereof, for an Act to con-
stitute and incorporate a Company to be called
the Auckland Waterworks Company ; and to
enable such Company to make, construct, com-
plete, and maintain Waterworks commencing
at the Onehunga Springs, at or near Mr.
Bycroft's Mill in Onehunga, thence passing
through certain lands to One Tree Hill to a
Reservoir to be formed there, and thence
