PROCLAMATION.

By His Excellency Colonel THOMAS
GORE BROWNE, C.B., Gover-
nor and Commander-in-Chief in
and over the Islands of New
Zealand, and Vice Admiral of
the same, &c., &c.

WHEREAS by an Act of the General
Assembly of New Zealand, 21st and
22nd Victoria, No. 15, intituled the "New
Zealand Post Office Act, 1858," it is enacted
that it shall be lawful for the Governor in
Council, from time to time, by Proclamation
to be published in the New Zealand Gazette,
to fix, alter, and abolish the rates of postage at
any time payable within the Colony for the
transmission of letters by post, either between
places within New Zealand, or to or from places
beyond seas, and at what time the same shall
be paid; and that the postage so made payable
shall be charged and paid accordingly.

Now therefore I, the Governor, in pursuance
of the said recited authority, with the advice
and consent of the Executive Council of New
Zealand, do fix the several Rates of Postage,
and the times at which the same respectively
shall be paid, specified in the Schedule to this
Proclamation annexed.

And I do appoint and declare that this Pro-
clamation shall take effect on and after the first
day of January, one thousand eight hundred
and fifty-nine.

under the Public Seal of the
Colony, at Government House,
at Auckland, in the Colony
aforesaid, this tenth day of De-
cember, in the year of our Lord
one thousand eight hundred and
fifty-eight.

SCHEDULE.

RATES OF POSTAGE.

I.—Inland Letters.

From any part of New Zealand, to any other
part of New Zealand.

Pre-paid or not, according to the option of the
sender.

A uniform rate according to the following
scale :—

Not exceeding ½ oz. in weight, s. d.
0 2
Exceeding ½ oz. not exceeding 1 oz. 0 4
And so on, increasing fourpence for every ad-
ditional ounce, or fraction of an ounce.

II.—Foreign Letters.

All Postage on Letters addressed to places
beyond the Colony, must be pre-paid.

A uniform rate (except where otherwise herein
specially provided) according to the following
scale :—

Not exceeding ½ oz. ... s. d.
0 6
Exceeding ½ oz. not exceeding 1 oz. 1 0
And so on, increasing one shilling for every ad-
ditional ounce, or fraction of an ounce.

[NOTE.]
Letters sent to or by Seamen and Soldiers
in Her Majesty's Service, and in the Service of
the East India Company, will be transmitted
within the Colony ; and between the Colony and
any Post Office in the British Dominions, at a
charge of one penny provided the following
regulations are observed: —
1st, Each letter must not exceed ½ ounce,
in weight.
2nd, It must be superscribed with the name
of the writer, his description or class in the
Vessel or Regiment, and signed by the
Officer at the time in command.
3rd, The Postage must be pre-paid.
[Any letter of this description posted or re-
ceived in the Colony, not in accordance with
the foregoing regulations, will be treated as an
ordinary letter.]

III.
Special rates payable on certain Letters, in
addition to the ordinary rate of Foreign Post-
age of 6d. per ½ ounce.

  1. Via Marseilles, to the United Kingdom.
    Letters under ¼ oz. ... s. d.
    0 3
    ¼ oz. and under ½ oz. 0 6
    And so on, increasing threepence for every ad-
    ditional ¼ of an oz. or fraction of a ¼ of
    an oz.

  2. Letters addressed to Officers on board any
    of Her Majesty's Ships on Foreign Stations,
    sent through the United Kingdom.
    Not exceeding ½ oz. s. d.
    0 6
    Exceeding ½ oz. and not exceed-
    ing 1 oz. 1 0
    And so on, increasing one shilling for every ad-
    ditional ounce, or fraction of an ounce.

  3. Letters forwarded via the United Kingdom,
    to the under-mentioned Colonies and Foreign
    Countries.
