papers, which relate principally to by-gone
transactions and especially to the refusal of the
Government to confirm Mr. Busby in the pos-
session of large tracts of land acquired from
(20th June, 1854.) the Natives by himself while
holding the position of British resident in New
Zealand, I enclose for your information a copy
of their reply.

You will acquaint Mr. Busby that I find
nothing in his representation to call for inter-
ference, and it will be desirable that you should
make it known that Her Majesty's Govern-
ment are not prepared to encourage the prac-
tice on the part of individual members of the
Legislatures of making direct appeals to the
Secretary of State on matters which the Law
has now remitted to the control of the authori-
ties upon the spot.

HIS Excellency the Officer Administering
the Government has been pleased to di-
rect that the following Letter from Captain
DRURY, R.N., commanding H.M. S. "Pan-
dora," should be published for general infor-
mation.

The "tracing" of the rocks alluded to by
Captain Drury can be seen at the Office of
the Surveyor-General.

NOTICE TO MARINERS.

H.M.S. Pandora,
October 28th, 1854.

SIR,

I have the honour to make known the ex-
istence of the undermentioned rocks between
Wanga Point and Mahurangi, some of them, being
occasionally above water, will be known to coast-
ers, but as I do not find them in the present
chart, I send their positions and a tracing from
the survey of them.

A rocky patch a mile W.N.W off Wanga
Point, dries 4 feet at low water springs, extends
of a mile east and west and the same distance
north and south, has a channel of 3 fathoms be-
tween it and the Wanga shore.

A sunken rock with 9 feet at low water, with
a depth of from 7 to 10 fathoms round it, about 2
cables north of the above patch. From it the
high water of Wanga Point bears S., 64°E.
Inner Wanga Point, S. 47° W.
And Rocky Islet, north of Tiri Tiri, N.
83°E.

This rock must be avoided by vessels beating
between Wanga Point and Tiri Tiri and is in the
line of passage from Auckland to Mahura-
ngi.

The low water of Wanga Point extends
N.E. b. N. of a mile from the high water.

One and a-quarter miles south of Mahurangi
Harbour there is a rocky patch dries at half-tide,
tho outer part half a mile from the nearest point
of land, there is a channel of 3 fathoms between
it and the shore.

From the outer rock—
Kiahou bears N. 12° W.
South end of Whora Is-
lands N. 25° E.
Bastion Rock of the Hot
Springs S. 15° W.
All bearings magnetic, and soundings for low
water spring tides.
