JOURNAL OF PROCEEDINGS

OF THE

LEGISLATIVE COUNCIL.

TUESDAY, 14th SEPTEMBER, 1847.

His Excellency the Lieut.-Governor, the hon. Colonial Secretary, the hon. Colonial Treasurer, the hon. Attorney General, Mr. Brown and Mr. Merriman; absent, Mr. Domett.

Council met pursuant to adjournment.

Minutes of last meeting read and confirmed.

The Colonial Secretary presented a petition from the Members of the Presbyterian church in Auckland, praying that the Marriage Bill, now before the Council might not be allowed to pass into law.

Petition received and read.

The Attorney General moved the order of the day for the further consideration in committee of the 'Marriage Bill.'

On the re-consideration of the first clause, committee adjourned until Thursday next.

The Lieutenant Governor laid on the table the several returns relating to the Resident Magistrates Court in Auckland, called for by Mr. Brown on Thursday, 26th August, 1847.

The Attorney General gave notice that he should move for the third reading of the 'Impounding Bill' on Thursday next.

The Attorney General also gave notice that he should move the first reading of the 'Registration Bill,' on Thursday next.

The Colonial Treasurer gave notice that he should move the first reading of the 'Debenture Bill,' on Thursday next.

Mr. Brown gave notice that he should move for a copy of all the correspondence with the Colonial Office since Nov. 1845, regarding the land claimants and their claims to land, in this colony, or in reference to the disposal of Native Lands, or the waste lands of the Crown, on Saturday next.

Mr. Merriman gave notice that he should on Thursday next, move a series of amendments to the 'Marriage Bill.'

Council adjourned at half-past 3, until 2 o'clock on Thursday, the 16th instant.

Bill amended, and further consideration thereof postponed until Saturday next.

The Attorney General moved the order of the day for the third reading of the 'Impounding Bill.'

Bill read a third time and passed.

The Attorney General moved the order of the day for the first reading of the 'Registration Bill.'

Bill read a first time.

The Colonial Treasurer moved the order of the day for the first reading of the 'Debenture Bill.'

Bill read a first time.
