VOL. VI. AUCKLAND, SATURDAY, DEC. 5, 1846. No. 21.
Colonial Secretary's Office,
Auckland, December 3, 1846.
HIS Excellency the Lieutenant-Governor
has been pleased to direct the publi-
cation of the following Letters.
By His Excellency's command,
ANDREW SINCLAIR,
Colonial Secretary.
Colonial Secretary's Office,
Auckland, December 3, 1846.
SIR,βUpon your departure from this Co-
lony with that portion of the 96th Regiment,
which is under your command, The Lieute-
nant-Governor and the Executive Council
have thought it right to express their sense
of the obligations the Government and the
Inhabitants of this Colony are under to your-
self and the officers of your Regiment, for the
gallantry and indefatigable zeal which you
have on all occasions exhibited for the sup-
pression of rebellion and the protection of the
lives and property of Her Majesty's subjects,
and this under circumstances, the trying and
difficult nature of which can only be fully ap-
preciated by those acquainted with the nature
of the country, and the character of the enemy
against which you have had to contend.
The Lieutenant-Governor and Executive
Council have also placed on record the sense
they entertain of the bravery which has on
every occasion been exhibited in the field, and
of the discipline which has always been shewn
in quarters by the non-commissioned officers
and private soldiers of the Detachment of the
96th Regiment, which conduct on their part
has not only had the effect of quelling insur-
rection, but has tended to conciliate and gain
the attachment not only of the European po-
pulation, but (particularly in the case of de-
tached posts) of that portion of the native
inhabitants of this Colony with whom they
have been brought into intercourse, many of
whom were previously in open revolt against
the Queen's Authority.
I am to request that you would cause these
the sentiments of the Lieutenant-Governor
and the Executive Council to be made known
to the Detachment under your command, in
such manner as you may think most proper.
I have the honor to be,
Sir,
Your most obedient servant,
ANDREW SINCLAIR,
Colonial Secretary.
Lieut. Col. Hulme,
Commanding Detachment
of H. M. 96th Regiment,
Colonial Secretary's Office,
Auckland, December 3, 1846.
SIR,βUpon your departure from this Co-
lony with that portion of the 58th Regi-
ment, which is under your command, the
Lieutenant-Governor and the Executive Coun-
cil have thought it right to express their sense
of the obligations the Government and the
