PROCLAMATION.
By His Excellency WILLOUGHBY
SHORTLAND, Esquire, the Officer
Administering the Government in and
over Her Majesty's Colony of New
Zealand and its Dependencies, and
Vice Admiral of the same, &c. &c. &c.
Issued under the Public Seal of the
Colony.
WHEREAS by an Ordinance, enacted by
the Governor of New Zealand, with
the advice and consent of the Legislative Coun-
cil thereof, Session I, No. 2., reciting, that Her
Majesty had been pleased to declare her gra-
cious intention to recognize Claims to Land
which may have been obtained on equitable
terms, from the Chiefs, or other individuals of
the Aboriginal Tribes inhabiting New Zealand,
the Governor of New Zealand is empowered
to appoint Commissioners to hear and examine,
and report upon such claims. And whereas
it is enacted by the said Ordinance, that the
Commissioners so to be appointed shall, in ex-
amining such claims, inquire into and set forth
the consideration paid for Land so claimed, and
the date and other circumstances attending the
purchase thereof; and that on being satisfied,
that the person making such Claim is entitled to
any Grant of Land, according to the said decla-
ration of Her Gracious Majesty, the said com-
missioners shall report the same, and the
grounds thereof to the said Governor accord-
ingly.
And whereas, by an Ordinance enacted by
the Governor of New Zealand, with the advice
and consent of the Legislative Council, Session
II, No. 14, it is enacted, That whenever it
shall be so reported that any person is entitled
to a Grant of Land in respect of his alleged pur-
chase, such person shall, on the Report being
confirmed by His Excellency the Governor, be
entitled to a Grant from the Crown.
And whereas, the Commissioners appointed
to investigate Claims to Land have reported
that the following persons have made purchases
of Land, and that such persons are entitled to a
Grant of Land in respect thereof.
NOW THEREFORE, I, the Officer Administering
the Government, do hereby proclaim and declare
that I have confirmed the Reports of the Com-
missioners, in the following cases, in which
Grants of Land are recommended to be made.
Given under my hand, at Government
House, Auckland, this twenty-sixth day
of April, in the year of our Lord one
thousand eight hundred and forty-three.
