DIED—On Monday the 6th instant, aged 13 months, Emma, daughter of Mr. Aberline, just arrived from Melbourne, Port Philip.

To Correspondents—Several communications are deferred till next week, for want of room. We shall shortly enlarge.

THE NEW ZEALAND ADVERTISER, AND BAY OF ISLANDS GAZETTE.
KORORARIKA:—JULY 9, 1840.

We were somewhat disappointed that the meeting of landowners which had been advertised for Monday last, did not take place. Last week we wrote an article on the subject of that meeting, which, on consideration, we thought it better to suppress, in the hope that the inhabitants themselves would make the matter sufficiently public to satisfy themselves in the outset. But we own we have now some fears lest the thing should be forgotten. We will, therefore, take up the subject again.

It seems to us of high importance that, if it be possible, the residence of Government functionaries, and the establishment of each department of Government business here should take place. We do not presume to dictate in the matter to either the Government or the inhabitants of Kororarika—we merely give our individual impressions. It is exceedingly desirable on account of both parties, that every feeling of rivalry and opposition should be obliterated. Public is best maintained when there is no estrangement of interest or affection. The population of these townships is not, and, perhaps, may not be yet a long time—sufficiently large to allow a division of their energies. We cannot help fearing that, it may be a long period before the good will be accomplished, under the present circumstances, which might be speedily hoped for were the Government established here.

We speak not at all of the relative or comparative value of the two townships of Russell and Kororarika. The thing to be especially remarked is, that already there is a population and a township here, ready for Government to work upon, and of sufficient importance to render material assistance in the establishment of
