After providing that no duties shall be levied until August, 1841, the Bill further exempts manufactured tobacco from duty until 1843, in order to conciliate, or rather to prevent dissatisfaction amongst the Natives. ADELAIDE NEWS.

From the South Australian Register, Aug 15th, 18th, and 20th, and Adelaide Chronicle, Aug 19.

The brigantine Maria from Port Adelaide to Hobart Town, was lost on the Southern coast of South Australia, in some yet inexplicable manner. She had 16 passengers on board, including children, and the crew consisted of 8 more besides the Captain and mate. Of these not one could be traced alive, but 4 bodies were found half buried in the sand, being those of children, those of women, known to have proceeded as passengers in the vessel, and identified by their wedding rings; and the other 2 were male bodies. All were in a state of nudity, and one woman neatly stripped of flesh; They had been doubtless murdered by some party of Natives and party of police under Major O'Halloran, had proceeded to the spot.

A bill had been brought into the Legislative Council for the prohibition of distilleries.

Mr. Eyre had proceeded on his expedition of discovery northward, with the intention of planting the British flag in the centre of the Australian Continent. Some ladies had presented him with a Union flag, handsomely worked in silk, for that purpose.

D. Land per cwt. £1 to £1 4s; raisins 6d to 1s; timber, New Zealand pine per 100 feet, £1.

ENGLISH NEWS.

Lord William Russell, uncle of Lord John Russell, 70 years of age, was murdered at his own house, Norfolk street, in his bed, by some person who robbed the house of various costly articles. His Lordship’s valet was suspected of being accessory.

The Line of Great Western Railway was opened on the 13th of April. The rate of travelling in going down was 47 1/2 miles, and in returning 54 miles an hour.

The Hudson's Bay Company have at length solved the problem of the North West passage, having proceeded so far in both directions as to establish the conviction that both the Eastern and Western continents are separated from Boothia.

The penny postage is said to have been during its first quarter, notwithstanding that the stamped covers had not been issued, completely successful. Owing to various disadvantages, the plan had not been fairly tried. The decrease in its revenue, however, was not more than one third, while the number of letters sent was very much more than double.

The Assamese tea was reported by the Society of Arts to be greatly improved both in manufacture and flower.

The Frankfort Journal had continued the utter discomfiture of the Russian expedition against Chiva.

An order in Council had been issued conveying an informal declaration of war against China.
