Public Meeting and Commercial Notices

PUBLIC MEETING.

At Coromandel Harbour, Firth of Thames.

A Meeting of the Landed Proprietors of Coromandel, Firth of Thames, and the adjacent parts, and others connected with New Zealand, held at Coromandel Harbour, on the third day of September, 1840, for the purpose of taking into consideration the propriety of their joining the New Zealand Association in New South Wales, for the mutual defence of their rights and titles to their possessions in New Zealand:

1st Resolution—Moved by Mr. W. E. Cormack, and seconded by Mr. G. Gair,

That Mr. P. Abercrombie take the Chair, and that Mr. Wm. V. Brewer do act as Honorary Secretary.

2nd Resolution—Moved by Mr. Cormack, and seconded by Mr. White,

That the Landed Proprietors of Coromandel of the Firth of the Thames, and other adjacent parts, being convinced that the purchases they have made of Land from the Natives have been fair and honorable, and not prejudicial in extent or otherwise to the interests of future Emigrants to New Zealand, (as all lands claimed and possessed by British subjects form together only a fractional part of the Territory), deem it necessary to join the New Zealand Association in Sydney, for the purpose of defending their Rights and Titles to their Lands in New Zealand, against the illegal proceedings of Sir George Gipps, and the Council of New South Wales, undertaken under the plea of expediency for the future interests of New Zealand, and in defiance of the solemn assurances of Her Majesty’s Government in Great Britain, the Marquis of Normanby (when Secretary for the Colonies,) and the Lieutenant Governor of New Zealand, Captain Hobson, on his first arrival in New Zealand, that the Titles and Possessions of British Subjects should be respected and confirmed.

3rd Resolution—Moved by Mr. White and seconded by Mr. Dowling,

That this Meeting view with feelings of great dissatisfaction the conduct of the Governor and the majority of the Council of New South Wales, and consider that the measure passed by them with regard to New Zealand, as decidedly detrimental not only to Landed Proprietors, but to the entire Mercantile community.

4th Resolution—Moved by Mr. Cormack, and seconded by Mr. White,

That the Resolutions as passed at a Meeting of the New Zealand Association, held in Sydney on the 2nd April last, and also at the Bay of Islands; be adopted at this Meeting.

5th Resolution—Moved by Mr. M’Leod, and seconded by Mr. Downing,

That a Copy of these Resolutions be left with the Members of this Meeting, for the purpose of obtaining the names and subscriptions of those, who, from distance could not attend.

6th Resolution—Moved by Mr. M’Innes, and seconded by Captain Nagle,

That Mr. Peter Abercrombie receive all Subscriptions collected by members, and transmit them to the funds of the New Zealand Association at Sydney.

7th Resolution—Moved by Mr. Moore, and seconded by Mr. White,

That these Resolutions be forwarded immediately to the Committee of the New Zealand Association in Sydney, and be published in the different Newspapers of New Zealand, and Sydney.

8th Resolution—Moved by Mr. Cormack and seconded by Captain Nagle,

That it is the unanimous opinion of this meeting, that a Memorial be prepared and transmitted to Parliament as speedily as possible, praying for separation of New Zealand from the Government of New South Wales,—thus placing sufficient confidence in the honor and integrity of His Excellency Captain Hobson’s Government, without any interference of the Governor and Council of New South Wales.

9th Resolution—Moved by Mr. Cormack, and seconded by Captain Nagle,

That Mr. W. V. Brewer be appointed co-jointly with Mr. Charles B. Brewer Agent for this Association.

10th Resolution—Moved by Mr. White, and seconded by Mr. Downing,

That Mr. Abercrombie leave the Chair and Mr. Cormack take the Chair.

11th Resolution—Moved by Mr. Cormack and seconded by Captain Nagle,

That a vote of thanks be returned to Mr. Peter Abercrombie, for his very able conduct in the Chair.

12th Resolution—Moved by Mr. Downing and seconded by Mr. White,

That a vote of thanks be returned to Mr. Wm. V. Brewer, for his services as Honorary Secretary.
