to cause the sums referred to to be paid into
the Commissariat Chest, and for their Lord-
ships to pay over the amount to the Board of
Trade; or whether any other arrangement
appears preferable.
I have, &c.,
H. MERIVALE.
Sir C. E. Trevelyan,
&c., &c.
Extract from a letter from Sir C. E. Trevel-
yan to Herman Merivale, Esq., dated Trea-
sury Chambers, 8th May, 1851.
"I am commanded by the Lords Commis-
sioners of Her Majesty's Treasury to acquaint
you, for the information of Earl Grey, in reply
to your Letter dated 23rd Ultimo, that the
Commissariat Officers in the Colonies are re-
quired, by their instructions, to receive into the
Commissariat Chest all Moneys tendered to
them by a Colonial Government for remittance
to England on the Public Service, and to grant
Certificates of the sums so received; and upon
those certificates being transmitted to this
Board, the Paymaster General is authorized to
issue like sums to the parties in whose favour
they are granted.
"My Lords therefore would suggest that the
Governors of the Colonies be instructed, not
only to at the sums referred to in Mr.
Booth's Letter dated 3rd Ultimo, to be paid
into the Commissariat Chest, as proposed by
Lord Grey, but also to cause the Certificates of
such payments to be forwarded to the proper
Officer of the Board of Trade, for transmission
to this Board, in support of the claim to reim-
bursement of the amount."

HIS Excellency the GOVERNOR-IN-CHIEF di-
rects the publication of the following
letter and its enclosures, for general informa-
tion.
By His Excellency's command,
ALFRED DOMETT,
Civil Secretary.
British Consulate, Tahiti,
March 15th, 1851.
SIR—As vessels from New Zealand fre-
quently pass amongst the Islands in this neigh-
bourhood, many of which (particularly of the
Paumotu Group) appear to be very incorrectly
laid down on the Charts:
I do myself the honour of transmitting
to Your Excellency, herewith, the copies of two
letters which I have received from the French
Commissioner at this place, communicating
the rectified positions of the Island of Toubouai
and six of the Paumotu or Low Islands, as
ascertained by recent surveys of French
Hydrographers.
I have, &c.,
G. C. MILLER,
H. M. Consul.
His Excellency the Governor of
New Zealand, &c., &c., &c.,

hydrographique de Mr. Delamarche, cet in-
génieur hydrographe má adressé l'observation
suivante.
(Signed)
BONARD.
Monsieur Miller,
Consul de S. M. Britannique,
Papeete.
Papeete (Tahiti),
le 12 Février, 1851.
MONSIEUR LE CONSUL—Les travaux hydro-
