HIS EXCELLENCY the LIEUTENANT-GOVERNOR directs it to be notified, for general information, that Despatches respecting the relief rendered to the Officers and Crew of the French Frigate “Alcmène,” wrecked on the 3rd of last June, on the western coast of this Province, have been received from the GOVERNOR-IN-CHIEF, conveying His Excellency's entire approval of the arrangements made by the Naval and Military Authorities, and his warmest thanks to the officers and men employed; especially Captain Oliver, of H.M. Ship “Fly,” Lieutenant Balneavis, Lieutenant Cooper, and Surgeon Thomson, of the 58th Regiment, whose services on the occasion have been most favourably represented to the Secretary of State.

The GOVERNOR-IN-CHIEF has also been pleased to express his strong approval of the excellent conduct of the Natives of the Kaipara district under such trying circumstances, more especially that of the Chief Matiu, of the Ngatiwhatua tribe, and of the reward bestowed upon him by the Lieutenant-Governor. To the Natives of the Wairoa and Hokianga districts much praise is also due, and their conduct will receive the consideration to which it is entitled when they shall carry into effect their intention of giving up certain stores now in their safe keeping. The several reports that have been received by the Government on these subjects have likewise been forwarded to the authorities at home.

For the Colonial Secretary,
J. COATES.
