Given under my hand, and issued under the Public Seal of the Province of New Ulster, at Auckland, this twenty-third day of April, in the Year of Our Lord one thousand eight hundred and fifty-one.

G. GREY,
Governor.

By His Excellency’s command,
ANDREW SINCLAIR,
Colonial Secretary.

GOD SAVE THE QUEEN!

Colonial Secretary’s Office,
Auckland, April 24th, 1851.

NOTICE is hereby given that His Excellency Lieutenant-Colonel WYNYARD, C.B., will take the Oaths as LIEUTENANT-GOVERNOR of this Province, publicly, in the Grounds of the late Government House, on SATURDAY next, the 26th instant, at twelve o’clock, noon.

All Naval, Military, and Civil Officers, Clergymen of different denominations, Justices of the Peace, and such of the Colonists as can conveniently attend, are invited to be present on the occasion.

By His Excellency’s command,
ANDREW SINCLAIR,
Colonial Secretary.

Colonial Secretary’s Office,
Auckland, 22nd April, 1851.

HIS EXCELLENCY the GOVERNOR-IN-CHIEF directs the publication, for general information, of the following Extract from a letter received from the Resident Magistrate, New Plymouth, dated 7th April, 1851, relative to the loss of the Schooner “John Whiteley.”

By His Excellency’s command,
ANDREW SINCLAIR,
Colonial Secretary.

“I also consider it my duty to bring under the notice of His Excellency the Governor-in-Chief the exemplary conduct of the Natives resident in the neighbourhood when the vessel was stranded. Hearing the reports of muskets during the night, they were on the beach at daylight, and fortunately went off and rescued the crew from the wreck, which went to pieces before eight o’clock. The exertions of the Natives, both men and women, were also successful in saving a considerable portion of the cargo, which was handed over to the owners. Rawiri and Tahana were conspicuous in their endeavours to save property.

“The Puketapu natives have always been the most unruly and troublesome set in the district; and having now behaved in so praiseworthy a manner, it affords a good opportunity of showing them that we appreciate it.”

Printed by WILLIAMSON & WILSON, for the New Zealand Government.
