GOVERNMENT NOTICE.
COLONIAL SECRETARY'S OFFICE,
Wellington, 4th November, 1853.
THE following Proclamations by His Excellency the Governor are published for general information:—
PROCLAMATION.
By His Excellency SIR GEORGE GREY, Knight Commander of the Most Honourable Order of the Bath, Governor and Commander-in-Chief in and over Her Majesty's Colony of New Zealand and its Dependencies, and Vice-Admiral of the same, &c.
Whereas by an Act of the Imperial Parliament, passed in the session holden in the 13th and 14th years of Her Majesty's reign, entitled "An Act to grant a representative constitution to the Colony of New Zealand," it is amongst other things enacted that it shall be lawful for the Governor of New Zealand, by proclamation to be from time to time issued by him for that purpose, to divide the said colony into districts, and to alter the limits of any districts so formed, or which may have been previously formed under the authority of any Act or Ordinance; and it is by the said Act further enacted, that it shall be lawful for the Governor from time to time, as he shall see occasion, by such proclamation as aforesaid, to appoint fit places within each of such districts for the taking the poll at elections of members to serve in the House of Representatives, and also to appoint returning officers for such districts respectively: Now, therefore, I, the Governor of New Zealand, in pursuance of the powers vested in me by the said recited Act, do hereby proclaim and declare that the said Colony of New Zealand shall, for the purposes of the said Act, be divided into the following districts, that is to say:—
Northern Division
- Bay of Islands
- Northern Auckland
- Southern Auckland
Middle Division
4. New Plymouth
5. Wanganui and Rangitikei
6. Wellington
Southern Division
7. Nelson
8. New Munster
9. Canterbury
10. Otago
And I do hereby further proclaim and declare that the places hereinafter mentioned shall be the places for taking the poll at elections of members to serve in the House of Representatives for the said several districts respectively, that is to say:—
- Bay of Islands — Russell
- Northern Auckland — Auckland
- Southern Auckland — Auckland
- New Plymouth — New Plymouth
- Wanganui and Rangitikei — Wanganui
- Wellington — Wellington
- Nelson — Nelson
- New Munster — Wellington
- Canterbury — Lyttelton
- Otago — Dunedin
And I do hereby appoint the several officers hereinafter named to be returning officers for the said several districts respectively:—
- Bay of Islands — The Resident Magistrate at Russell
- Northern Auckland — The Collector of Customs at Auckland
- Southern Auckland — The Sub-Treasurer at Auckland
- New Plymouth — The Resident Magistrate at New Plymouth
- Wanganui and Rangitikei — The Resident Magistrate at Wanganui
- Wellington — The Deputy-Assistant Commissary-General
- Nelson — The Resident Magistrate at Nelson
- New Munster — The Colonial Secretary
- Canterbury — The Resident Magistrate at Lyttelton
- Otago — The Resident Magistrate at Dunedin
Given under my hand and issued under the Seal of the Colony, at Government House, Auckland, this fourth day of November, in the year of our Lord one thousand eight hundred and fifty-three.

NOTICE TO MARINERS.
HARBOUR MASTER'S OFFICE,
Auckland, 3rd November, 1853.
Notice is hereby given that a bell buoy has been placed at the entrance of the Rangitoto Channel, in the Hauraki Gulf, in eight fathoms water, with the following distinguishing marks, namely, black colour, and the word "Rangitoto" painted in white letters.
All masters of vessels are hereby cautioned against mistaking this buoy for any other, and are requested to keep at a proper distance from it.

GENERAL ORDER.
HEAD-QUARTERS,
Auckland, 2nd November, 1853.
The Commander of the Forces has received Her Majesty's commands to reduce the strength of the troops in New Zealand, and to withdraw certain regiments from the Colony.
The following is the distribution of the troops which will remain in New Zealand after the departure of those about to leave:—
- 58th Regiment at Wellington and Wanganui
- 65th Regiment at Auckland and New Plymouth
- Royal Artillery at Auckland and Wellington
- Royal Engineers at Auckland
The above arrangements will take effect from the 1st January, 1854.
