HIS Excellency the Governor-in-Chief has been pleased to direct that the following Regulations be published for general information.

By His Excellency’s command,
ANDREW SINCLAIR,
Colonial Secretary.

Howick, April 20th, 1849.

Sir,

In conformity with the Proclamation published in the “Government Gazette,” dated November 2nd, 1848, No. 24, relative to depasturing cattle on the waste lands of the Crown, the Wardens beg to hand you a copy of these Regulations for this hundred.

We consider the unoccupied Crown Lands in the hundred of Howick capable of depasturing one thousand head of great cattle, and have apportioned the number of cattle, which may be depastured for the ensuing year by every person holding a license, according to the annexed list, containing the name of each person and the number of cattle he is entitled to run on the waste lands of this hundred.

In our decision we have not only been guided by the amount of money paid into the public Treasury, but, in addition, we have ascertained the quantity of land fenced, the quantity of land under cultivation, and, as near as possible, the amount of money expended in building and other improvements on the lands occupied by persons holding depasturing licenses in this hundred.

We have the honor to be,

Sir,
Your most obedient Servants,

C. H. M. Smith,
H. McIntyre,
W. Mason,

Wardens for the hundred of Howick.

W. Gisborne, Esq.,
Commissioner of Crown Lands.
