PROCLAMATION
By His Excellency GEORGE GREY,
Esquire, Governor-in-Chief, in
and over the Islands of New Zealand, and Governor of the
Provinces of New Ulster and
New Munster, and Vice-Admiral
of the same, &c., &c.
WHEREAS, by Letters Patent under
the Great Seal of the High Court of
Admiralty, bearing date the thirtieth day of
December, in the year of our Lord, one thousand
eight hundred and forty-six, Her Majesty
has been graciously pleased ordinate,
constitute, and appoint me, George Grey, Esquire, to be
Her Majesty’s Vice Admiral, Commissary,
and Deputy, in the Office of Vice Admiralty,
in the said Islands of New Zealand, and
Provinces of New Ulster and New Munster,
and territories thereon depending; to take cognizance of, and proceed in, all cases, civil,
and maritime, and in complaints, contracts,
offences, or suspected offences, crimes, pleas,
debts, &c., &c., within the maritime jurisdiction of the Vice-Admiralty of the said Islands
of New Zealand, and Provinces of New Ulster
and New Munster, and territories depending
on the same, to hear, and determine the same,
according to the rights, statutes, laws, and
ordinances, and customs anciently observed;
with power of deputing and surrogating in
any place, for the premises, one or more deputy
or deputies:—
Now I, the Governor-in-Chief in and over
the Islands of New Zealand, in pursuance
of the authority in me vested in that behalf,
do hereby appoint
William Martin, Esq.,
Chief Justice of the Supreme Court, my
Deputy, in and for the Province of New
Ulster, and
Henry Samuel Chapman, Esq.,
a Judge of the said Supreme Court, my
Deputy in and for the Province of New
Munster, with full power to take cognizance
of, and proceed in all matters, and to hear
and determine the same in manner prescribed
by the said recited Letters Patent.
Given under my hand, and issued
under the Public Seal of the
aforesaid Islands of New Zealand,
at Government House, at
(L.S.) Auckland, in the Province of
New Ulster, this first day of January,
in the Year of our Lord
one thousand eight hundred and
forty-eight.

directs it to be notified, that the undermentioned Officers have this day taken and
subscribed the proper Oaths of their respective offices:
His Honor William Martin, Esq.,
as Chief Justice of the Islands of New Zealand.
The Hon. Andrew Sinclair,
as Colonial Secretary for the Province of New
Ulster.
The Hon. William Swainson,
as Attorney General for the said Province, and
The Hon. Alexander Shepherd,
as Colonial Treasurer and Receiver-General
for the said Province.
