JOURNAL OF PROCEEDINGS

IN THE

LEGISLATIVE COUNCIL

OF THE ISLANDS OF NEW ZEALAND.

Wellington, Tuesday, June 3, 1851.

Present—

His Excellency Sir George Grey, K.C.B., Governor-in-Chief.

His Excellency Edward John Eyre, Lieutenant-Governor of New Munster.

And the Members as on Friday, also

The Hon. Francis Dillon Bell.

The Council met pursuant to adjournment.

The Rev. the Colonial Chaplain read prayers.

The following gentlemen, having taken the prescribed oath, took their seats:—

The Hon. Constantine Augustus Dillon,

„ William Oldfield Cautley,

„ George Cutfield.

The Minutes of the last meeting read and confirmed.


His Excellency laid on the table sundry letters, addressed to the Government, on the subject of the “Land Claimants Bill.”

Also a Memorial from certain sheep-owners and others in the district of Nelson, on the subject of the duty on tobacco used in sheep-dressing, and praying for a remission of the same.

The Colonial Secretary presented a Memorial from certain Auckland residents, on the subject of “Land Claimants Bill.”

Mr. Cautley presented a petition from certain inhabitants of the district of Nelson praying that a sum of money be granted for the completion of a bridge over the Maitai River in the said town.

Also a Memorial from residents in the same settlement, setting forth the inconvenience experienced by them from the state of certain roads, and praying attention of the Council thereto.

On the motion of His Excellency the Lieutenant-Governor, the Auckland Land-owners memorial ordered to be printed.
