IN PURSUANCE of Instructions received from Her Majesty by a Warrant under the Royal Sign Manual and
Signet bearing date 14th January 1850, His Excellency the Governor-in-Chief
has been pleased to appoint by Letters Patent under the Public Seal of the Islands of New Zealand
Henry Samuel Chapman, Esquire,
and
Sidney Stephen, Esquire,
to be Judges of the Supreme Court of the said Islands.

PROCLAMATION.
By His Excellency Sir George Grey, K.C.B., Governor-in-Chief in and over the Islands
of New Zealand, and Governor of the Provinces of New Ulster and New Munster, and Vice Admiral of the same, &c., &c., &c.
WHEREAS, by a Proclamation bearing date the 18th day of January, 1844, the Colony of New Zealand, for the purposes of the Ordinance for establishing a Supreme Court, was divided into two districts by the name of the Northern and Southern Districts:
And whereas it is expedient that the Southern District should be subdivided:
Now, therefore, I, the Governor, with the advice of the Executive Council, pursuant to the authority in me vested in that behalf, do hereby proclaim and declare that that part of the Colony of New Zealand heretofore included within such Southern District shall, for the purposes of the said Ordinance, be divided into two districts, to be called the Middle and Southern Districts.
And I do hereby proclaim and declare that the Middle District shall include all that portion of the Northern Island of New Ulster lying to the southward of a line commencing from a point on the coast two miles in a straight line southward of the mouth of the River Wairoa, in Hawke’s Bay; thence in a straight line to the highest summit of the mountain usually called Tongariro; thence along the highest ridge lying between that mountain and the summit of Mount Egmont; from the summit of Mount Egmont to the source of Otu Matua to the sea; and all that portion of the Island of New Munster lying to the northward of the 42 degree of south latitude, and also so much of the sea adjacent thereto as lies within the jurisdiction of the Vice Admiral of New Zealand.
And that the Southern District shall include all that portion of the Colony of New Zealand which lies to the southward of the 42 degree of south latitude, together with so much of the sea adjacent thereto as lies within the jurisdiction of the Vice Admiral of New Zealand.
And whereas, by the said Supreme Court Ordinance, the Governor is empowered to assign to each of the districts into which the Colony may be divided, a Judge or Judges, who shall have within the same all the powers and jurisdiction thereby given to the Supreme Court:
Now therefore, I, the Governor, in pursuance of such authority, do hereby proclaim and declare that I have assigned to the Middle District, Henry Samuel Chapman, Esq., Judge of the Supreme Court; and to the Southern District, Sidney Stephen, Esq., Judge of the Supreme Court.
Given under my Hand and issued under the Public Seal of the Islands of New Zealand, this 30th day of July, in the year of our Lord one thousand eight hundred and fifty.
