✨ Government Appointments and Notices
The Public is, however, distinctly in-
formed that nothing in the foregoing
notice is to be construed as conferring on
any one a right to a passage in the Govern-
ment Brig, on payment of the passage
money, but that it is still to be considered
a matter of favor as before, and only
granted as an accommodation to the
Public when no other opportunity offers.
By His Excellency’s Command,
Alfred Domett,
Colonial Secretary.
Colonial Secretary’s Office,
Wellington, 6th April, 1848.
THE Regulations of the Colonial
Hospital for the admission of pa-
tients of European origin being con-
tinually neglected by applicants, who are
in the habit of resorting or writing in the
first instance to His Excellency the Lieut-
enant-Governor or the Colonial Secretary,
thereby creating delays which in some
cases might be dangerous, and in all must
be inconvenient to themselves, His Excel-
lency the Lieutenant-Governor directs it to
be notified for public information, that the
proper course to be adopted by any such
applicant is to repair in the first instance
to the Colonial Surgeon, who will furnish
him with a written memorandum, stating
whether the case is one which requires ad-
mission, and whether there is room in the
Hospital. This memorandum the appli-
cant should then take to the Resident
Magistrate, who will endorse thereon a
statement to the best of his knowledge of
the circumstances of the applicant, and his
ability, or otherwise, to provide medical
aid for himself or pay the whole or a part
of the cost of that which he obtains at the
Hospital. These conditions being com-
plied with, and the reports of the before-
mentioned officers being satisfactory, His
Excellency will then, as a matter of
course, append to the document an order
for the patient’s admission.
In cases of severe accident, or sudden
and dangerous illness, any one in pauper
circumstances will be at once admitted
into the Hospital, (none of the foregoing
steps being necessary) if there is room,
and if not, the Colonial Surgeon will ex-
amine into and prescribe for the case.

Alfred Domett,
Colonial Secretary.
