Note.—The fevers amongst the Natives do not appear to be of a contagious character, but generally the effect of inflammatory action in some part of the body. There are very few cases amongst the white people. The causes of these diseases have been fully explained in a former Report, as well as in a letter now in course of publication for the Natives. With the exception of the late prevailing Epidemic Influenza, and subsequently Hooping-Cough, this climate is generally speaking healthy for Europeans. The amount and nature of disease amongst the Native population is no criterion of the climate as regards the white people, for there are causes operating amongst the Natives which fully explain the difference of effect on the two populations.\n
