NOTICE.

Colonial Secretary’s Office,
Wellington, 12th October, 1848.

A CROWN COMMISSIONER having been appointed to negotiate the purchase of the Wanarapa and the contiguous districts, His Excellency the Lieutenant-Governor directs it to be notified that the prohibition in the Government Gazette of the 9th October, 1847, against illegal arrangements with the native race for the renting or occupation of lands, will be immediately enforced against all persons who are now making, have recently made, or may hereafter attempt to make such arrangements in the districts above mentioned, and that any such arrangements be, after this notice, commenced, pursued, or acted upon, the persons aforesaid will be proceeded against under the “Native Land Purchase Ordinance,” Session 7, No. 19, which enacts that, “all such persons shall upon conviction forfeit and pay any sum not less than five pounds, nor more than one hundred pounds, to be recovered in a summary way.”

It must, however, be distinctly understood, that the above limitation to arrangements now making, recently made, or hereafter attempted, shall not be construed as a waiver of the right of Government to adopt the same course with respect to similar arrangements of an earlier date—should it unfortunately be found necessary to do so—nor as a recognition of the titles of any person holding under such last named arrangements.
