Her Majesty’s Sloop “Fly,”
Wellington, 26th June, 1848.
Sir,
Having heard through the Harbour
Master, that there is a Book off Jerningham
Point, on which several vessels have
been on shore, I have the honour to inform
your Excellency that I have placed a temporary Buoy thereon, and beg leave to enclose directions for avoiding it.
I have the honour to be,
Your Excellency’s
Most obedient servant,
(Signed) R. A. Oliver,
Commander.
To His Excellency
The Lieutenant-Governor,
&c., &c., &c.
Wellington, New Zealand.
“There is a Rock with seven feet
water on it, low water, spring tides, on
which several vessels have struck, seventy
fathoms NNW. of Jerningham Point, (the
point which forms the boundary between
Evans’ Bay and Lambton Harbour.) By
keeping a remarkable red brick house with
six windows in front, three above and three
below, with a white balcony between them,
to the right of a wooden house on the beach
with two garret windows on each side of
the roof, the first house on the beach to the
right of the windmill buildings, this danger
will be cleared. The soundings which
are deep to, will give no indication of this
pinnacle rock.”
R. A. Oliver.

OVERLAND MAILS.
Colonial Secretary’s Office,
Wellington, 31st July, 1848.
THE LIEUTENANT-GOVERNOR having been led to suppose that the
Public are not generally aware that an

Wellington and Auckland, His Excellency
has directed that a notification be given of
such arrangement.
This Mail leaves Wellington every alternate Tuesday morning at daylight, passes
through Wanganui and New Plymouth, and
is from thence forwarded regularly once a
fortnight to Auckland.
Letters sent by this conveyance may thus
be three or four weeks in reaching their
destination. The Postmaster has been instructed to afford every information to those
wishing to forward their correspondence by
this route. No letters will be transmitted
by these opportunities unless marked by
