PROTECTION is hereby Granted, under the provisions of the Goldfields Act 1866, to JOHN REID, for the term of Three years from the date hereof, for a Punt Ferry across the Orawaiti River, subject to the following conditions, viz :β€”

  1. That a substantial Punt shall be placed on the River at the site named, within two months from this date, and maintained in good working order during the term of protection.

  2. That competent ferrymen shall be always in attendance, and the ferry shall be at all times conducted to the satisfaction of the Warden of the district.

  3. The Warden of the district may, on being satisfied that the ferry is not conducted in an efficient manner, and in accordance with these conditions, suspend the operation of this protection until the matter of complaint be removed; and if the matter of complaint be not removed within a reasonable time, the Superintendent shall have the power to cancel this protection.

  4. The tolls to be charged for the use of the punt, between the hours of 6 a.m. and 8 p.m., shall not exceed the following, viz :β€”

Foot passengers, each . 0
Horse and rider . 1
Horses and Cattle, each . 1
Loaded Pack-horse . 1
Sheep and Goats, each . 0
Loaded dray with not exceeding 2 horses 5 0
Empty dray with not exceeding 2 horses 2 0
Government Officers, including Police, Road Overseers, Postmen, and Laborers, when on duty . Free.
Horses required by any of the above mentioned Government Officers or persons . Free.
  1. Double Fares may be charged between the hours of 8 p.m. and 6 a.m.

  2. This protection shall not have any effect or operation until the punt has been placed on the river in good working order, to the satisfaction of the Provincial Engineer.

  3. All Regulations which may at any time be brought into force under section 13 of "The Goldfields Act 1866," shall be deemed applicable to this protection as if it had been granted under the same.

  4. This protection shall not be transferred without the sanction of the Superintendent.
