PROROGATION OF COUNCIL.

SPEECH of his Honor the SUPERINTENDENT on the Prorogation of the Twentieth Session of the Nelson Provincial Council, on the 23rd June, 1870.

MR. SPEAKER AND GENTLEMEN OF THE PROVINCIAL COUNCIL—

I have assented, on behalf of his Excellency the Governor, to the following Act, in addition to the Executive Government Act, to which I signified my assent by message on the 3rd June instant:—

"An Act to appropriate the Revenue of the Province of Nelson for the Year ending the 31st of March, 1871."

I have reserved the following for the signification of his Excellency's pleasure thereon :—

"An Act to enable the Nelson Board of Works to raise the sum of Four Thousand Pounds by the Issue of Debentures ;"

"An Act to amend the Nelson Waterworks Act;"

"An Act to further amend an Act to authorise the Superintendent to guarantee Interest upon the Capital to be expended in the Construction of a Patent Slip or Dry Dock in the Port of Nelson."

The various measures in respect to which you have expressed a wish for legislation by the General Assembly shall be prepared and introduced to the House of Representatives at as early a date as possible.

It is not improbable that I shall be compelled to call you together before your usual time of meeting, upon business connected with the proposed Nelson and Cobden Railway; but you may rely upon my not doing so unless it shall appear to be absolutely necessary.

I now declare this Council prorogued.

The Nelson Provincial Council Buildings (depicted) were constructed beginning with the laying of the foundation stone on 26 August 1859, with the first Council meeting held there on 30 April 1861.

The buildings served Nelson for over a century before being demolished on 12 September 1969.
