PROCLAMATION.
By his Honor OSWALD CURTIS, Esquire, Superintendent of the Province of Nelson, in the Colony of New Zealand.
WHEREAS, by a certain Proclamation bearing date the Eighth day of June, One thousand eight hundred and sixty-eight, issued under my hand, certain Rules and Regulations were made and declared to be in force on the Nelson South West Goldfields: and Whereas it is expedient to alter and amend the said rules and regulations :
NOW, THEREFORE, I, OSWALD CURTIS, Superintendent of the Province of Nelson, in exercise of the power and authority in me vested in that behalf, do hereby proclaim and declare that from and after the First day of June, next, Clauses 2 and 3 of Section VIII., of the said Rules and Regulations are hereby Repealed, and the following Clauses shall come into operation in lieu thereof, that is to say :β
- Tunnelling.
Persons engaged in tunnelling to strike gold may be protected in the occupancy of a claim of a depth of 1,000 feet from the mouth of the tunnel, and a frontage of the length allowed in ordinary claims by Section II. Clause 1.
- Registration and Marking.
Claims under the preceding Clause, must be registered, (after application, and the posting of notices in the manner provided in Section IX.,) and the boundaries marked, and maintained by rows of pegs placed not more than 50 feet apart, and such pegs shall be at right angles with the frontage of the hill, along the entire depth allowed. Provided that when from the irregularity of the face of the hill, or from any other difficulty arising from the nature of the ground, the claim cannot be advantageously marked out in accordance with the above regulations, it shall be lawful for the Warden, either after a personal inspection of the ground, or a report on the subject by a Surveyor, to define a base line from which any claim or claims may be marked out, instead of from the face of the hill, to the depth of 1,000 feet, or less, at the discretion of the Warden.

THE SUPERINTENDENT directs it to be notified that he has appointed
JOHN HENRY LOWE, Esq., J.P.,
to be Visiting Justice of the Public Gaols at the undermentioned places within the Nelson South West Goldfields, viz.,
Westport, Charleston, Brighton, Cobden, Twelve-Mile Landing, Camptown, and Ahaura.
