VOL. XVI. NELSON, THURSDAY, APRIL 30, 1868. No. 23.
Superintendent's Office,
Nelson, 29th April, 1868.
THE SUPERINTENDENT directs the publication of the following Report for general information.
ALFRED GREENFIELD,
Provincial Secretary.
REPORT OF THE HOSPITAL COMMITTEE.
TO HIS HONOR THE SUPERINTENDENT.
Number of Patients.
SIR,—The number of patients during the financial year ending 31st March, 1868, was 127—viz., 113 males, 14 females. Discharged relieved, 31; cured, 69; dead, 11; remaining, 13—viz., 11 males, 2 females. Of these 24 were gold diggers. The greatest number at one time was 22; the smallest, 12. The number of out patients was 103, viz., 70 males and 35 females.
The actual cost for the year has been £1,150, as against £1,315 on the last estimates of the Provincial Government. But it is to be observed that, since the Committee of Management took control of the Hospital, convalescent cases have been dismissed to the Taranaki Buildings (if destitute), who would formerly have remained in Hospital until fit for work.
The actual cost per head per week has been, as nearly as can be computed, 23s. The charge made to such patients as could afford to pay has been 21s. per week each. Out of one hundred and twenty-seven patients, twenty-five have paid, or about one in five; but the total amount received from this source is only £81 3s. 3d., showing that, as might have been expected, those paying have been mostly short-time patients. This amount has been paid over to the Provincial Treasurer.
The average time of each patient in Hospital has been 55 days. This average has been in great measure owing to three or four very lingering cases received during the past year.
The Committee of Management (D. Rough and J. W. Barnicoat, Esqs., appointed by the Provincial Council, and C. Hunter Brown, Esq., appointed by
