VOL. XV. NELSON, THURSDAY, MARCH 28, 1867. No. 11.
Superintendent's Office, Nelson,
25th March, 1867.
HIS HONOR the Deputy-Superintendent directs the publication of the following Report and Returns for general information.
ALFRED GREENFIELD,
Provincial Secretary.
ANNUAL REPORT OF THE TRUSTEES OF THE NELSON TRUST FUNDS, FOR THE YEAR ENDED 1st DECEMBER, 1866.
In presenting to the public the usual Annual Report on the state of the Nelson Trust Funds, it may, at the commencement, be remarked, that a glance at the accompanying accounts will show that the Steam Fund is still the only account upon which report is necessary.
The concluding paragraph of the Report to the 1st December, 1865, looked forward to the present one as that which should contain a statement of the efforts to be made by the lessees to extricate the \"Nelson\" from her position on the sand bank, at the mouth of the River Grey.
As therein stated, the duty of launching the vessel having devolved upon the lessees, they did, during the month of December, 1865, make several attempts to accomplish that object, all of which proved ineffectual.
The sum of about one thousand pounds having been expended in these attempts, the Trustees thought it advisable to refuse their sanction to any further outlay, and accordingly requested the Lessees to take the necessary steps by the sale of the vessel as she then lay off the Grey, to put the Trustees in the position to make their claim upon the Underwriters for the Insurance, and also for the outlay incurred by them in endeavoring to launch her.
In accordance with this request the Lessees proceeded in the month of February, 1866, to the sale of the stranded steamer.
The sum she sold for was Β£780.
The Trustees then in due course made their claim upon the Underwriters; but up to the date of the closing the present accounts it had not been adjusted so as to enable the amount recoverable to be shewn.
By order of the Trustees,
H. C. DANIELL,
Secretary.
