POOR HOUSE.

Since last report the destitute poor have been removed from the old depot buildings to the houses formerly occupied by the Taranaki refugees, and their health has been satisfactory. But though it is not strictly within our province to refer to the matter, we may observe, that owing to the premises being unenclosed, and the absence of any resident authority the discipline and morality of the inmates has not improved.

GAOL.

The health of the prisoners generally has been very good, but the new comers from other parts, more especially from the West Coast, generally arrive with some disorders hanging about them, either the consequence of their own excesses or from exposure to the moist climate of that portion of the Colony, rendering medical aid necessary, and from the number of prisoners in the gaol calling somewhat heavily on the time and attention of the medical officers. The necessity of an infirmary attached to the gaol is becoming of much importance, as there exist at present no means of separating any prisoner, who may have any contagious or infectious disorder, from the others; thus at any time the health of the whole body of prisoners is liable to be affected, and should it unfortunately happen, would entail a very heavy expense and burden on the Government. There has been one birth in the gaol which would have caused the greatest inconvenience had there been more than one other female prisoner in the gaol at the time it occurred.

LUNATIC ASYLUM.

The Asylum is in a very satisfactory state and will probably meet the requirements of the Province for some years.

NUMERICAL RETURN OF PATIENTS DURING THE YEAR.

Males. Females. Total.
Remaining March 31, 1865 3 4 7
Admitted during the year 12 9 21
Discharged cured 12 8 20
Removed from Asylum 1 0 1
Died 0 0 0
Remaining March 31, 1866 1 6 7

PUBLIC HEALTH.

The epidemic of scarlatina referred to in last report has ceased. The existence of sporadic cases of typhoid fever in the town indicates the necessity of investing the Inspector of Nuisances with greater powers than he at present holds.
