VOL. XIV. NELSON, MONDAY, APRIL, 16, 1866. No. 9.

Superintendent's Office, Nelson,
April 13, 1866.

HIS Honor the Superintendent directs the publication of the following Reports and Returns for general information.

ALFRED GREENFIELD,
Provincial Secretary.

REPORT OF THE HOSPITAL SURGEONS FOR THE YEAR ENDING MARCH 31, 1866.

HOSPITAL.

In last year's report we pointed out the insufficiency of the existing Hospital accommodation, and gave the details to which we now beg to refer, of the alterations and additions required. During the past year the number and severity of the cases admitted has been such, that many of them have not had as good a prospect of recovery as they might have had in a ward constructed for Hospital purposes. For exampleβ€”35 cases of fever were treated this year as compared with 16 cases the year before, while, as we stated last year, there is not a room in the Hospital fit for the reception of one such case.

NUMERICAL RETURN OF PATIENTS TREATED.

Remaining March 31, 1865 ......... 17
Admitted during twelve months ... 118
Discharged, cured......................... 87
" relieved or incurable .. 9
Died ............................................. 14
Remaining March 31, 1866 ......... 25
Total treated during 12 months ... 135

Of these 124 were males, 11 females, and 6 natives; 58 following gold-mining pursuits. A considerable number of the fever cases were from the West Coast. Some doubt exists among New Zealand medical men as to the exact type of fever prevalent in the Colony. We have made careful post-mortem examinations when practicable, and have met with some cases of true typhoid fever. Many cases present no distinctive anatomical lesion, and are probably relapsing fevers. We are at present recording the diurnal variations of temperature of some of them, with a view to identifying their exact type. No instance of typhus fever has come under our observation. Many of the cases of acute disease from the West Coast are also modified by cachexia acquired by exposure to wet, and paludal emanations.
