HIS Honor the Superintendent directs the publication of the following Report and Returns for general information.
ALFRED DOMETT,
Provincial Secretary.
REPORT of the COMMISSIONERS
of IMMIGRATION of the PROVINCE
of NELSON.
Since the date of their last Report the Commissioners have introduced 107 Immigrants from England, 63 by the Sir George Pollock, and 44 by the Ravenscraig; those by the former vessel at £18 10s., and those by the latter at £16 15s. per adult. Applications have been forwarded during the year for 150 persons, the passages of 90 of whom are guaranteed by persons resident in the Province. The remaining 60 are Female Servants, who are to be selected by a Committee of Ladies in London, and introduced on their own guarantee for repayment. The Commissioners have adopted this plan in consequence of the great want of Female Domestic Servants in the Province, and in order to carry into effect a proposal made by a Committee of Gentlemen in Nelson—formed at the suggestion of Mr. Nash, of the firm of Nash and Scaife, of this city.
The Commissioners in furtherance of this plan have directed their Agent, Mr. Morrison, to communicate with the Ladies' Committee in question, and to send the Servants selected by them, in shipments of about 20 every three months.
Mr. Morrison having reported that a number of Miners in Cornwall and Devonshire would emigrate to Nelson, with their families, if any assistance could be granted to them; the Commissioners have accordingly authorised that gentleman to send out, for the present, equal to 100 adults, on their own guarantee for the repayment of their passages. To enable the Commissioners to carry out these instructions without interfering with the present system of Immigration, the Provincial Council will be asked to vote a portion of the Public Revenue, in aid thereof.
In the yearly statement of Receipt and Expenditure it will be seen that the Commissioners have expended the sum of £947 12s. 10d. in the purchase of 250 ounces of gold. This gold, which was procured from different parts of the Province, has been forwarded to London, to be exhibited at the Great International Exhibition, of 1862, after which it will be sold, and the proceeds paid to the credit of the Commissioners, for Immigration purposes.
