✨ Nelson Public Schools Report

19

age yearly addition to our numbers of about
150 children.

The attendance has again reached or rather
exceeded the point it had attained in 1859;
the average now being 63.80 per cent. These
figures, apparently uninteresting, really afford
valuable indications as to the state of our
schools and the public estimate of their use-
fulness. They agree with, and confirm the
observation I have made, that the schools are
generally improving, and afford a fair pros-
pect of still further progress.

A new school has been opened in the
Lower Takaka, and another is in process of
erection in the upper part of the Valley,
which will soon be completed.

The master's house and new girls school
at Richmond are in a forward state, and will
afford accommodation that was much wanted.

It may be noticed that there have been six
resignations or other changes among the
masters during the past year; and that
several vacancies are likely to occur very
shortly. The uncertainty which always exists
as to our being able to supply the vacancies
thus left with competent masters of good
character at a short notice is an inconvenience
which must always be felt more or less
in a small population like that of Nelson. Its
prejudicial effects are felt in several of our
schools; and it would be very desirable if
means could be found to palliate them, or if a
remedy could be suggested.

I am, Sir, your obedient servant,

J. D. GREENWOOD,

Inspector.
