REPORT OF THE CENTRAL BOARD OF EDUCATION, DEC., 1860.

To his Honor J. P. ROBINSON, Esq., Superintendent, Nelson.

SIRβ€”I have the honor to forward the Inspector's statement of the condition of the schools for the half-year ending December, 1860; with his reasons for making some alterations in the mode of taking the averages, in which the Board concurs.

Having agreed as to the propriety of offering additional inducements to promote general efficiency and regular attendance in the schools, the necessity of some uniform system in making the returns becomes apparent at once; whilst by inviting and making known for the future such remarks as the masters of the schools may think necessary in explanation, the means will be afforded them of stating any local hindrances or circumstances of any kind affecting the state of their schools that they may think it desirable to mention.

The Board trusts that in its next Return it may be able to give a favorable report of the effect produced by these modifications; which are at present too recent to allow of any decided opinions being expressed upon them.

I have the honor to be, &c.,
DONALD SINCLAIR,
Chairman.

Central Board of Education,
March 16, 1861.
