HIS Honour the Superintendent directs the publication of the following extracts from the General Government Gazette, for general information.

PROCLAMATION.

By His Excellency Colonel THOMAS GORE BROWNE, Companion of the most Honourable Order of the Bath, Governor and Commander-in-Chief in and over her Majesty's Colony of New Zealand and its Dependencies, and Vice-Admiral of the same, &c., &c., &c.

WHEREAS, by an Ordinance of the Lieutenant-Governor and the Legislative Council of the Colony, intituled "An Ordinance for establishing Standard Weights and Measures, and for the prevention of the use of such as are false and deficient," Session 7, No. 10, the Governor is empowered from time to time, by proclamation, to appoint and define the Towns and Districts to which the operation of the said Ordinance should extend:

Now, therefore, I, Thomas Gore Browne, the Governor as aforesaid, of the said Colony, in exercise of the said power and authority, do hereby proclaim and appoint that from and after the eleventh day of June, One thousand eight hundred and sixty, the operation of the said in part recited Ordinance shall extend to all that district whereof the boundaries are mentioned or described in the Schedule here-

The Nelson Provincial Council Buildings (depicted) were constructed beginning with the laying of the foundation stone on 26 August 1859, with the first Council meeting held there on 30 April 1861.

The buildings served Nelson for over a century before being demolished on 12 September 1969.
