HIS Honour the Superintendent directs the publication of the following CORRESPONDENCE, together with the GEOLOGICAL LECTURE, by Dr. Hochstetter, on part of the Province of Nelson, alluded to therein.

SIRβ€”As your visit to the Province of Nelson is now about to terminate, I have the honour, by direction of his Honour the Superintendent, to convey to you the thanks of the Provincial Government for the zeal and energy with which you have conducted your investigations into those parts of the province which your limited stay permitted you to visit. Your promptitude in resorting to every locality within those limits (often at the risk of considerable personal discomfort) which the Government suggested, or your experience pointed out as likely to be of interest, deserves their particular acknowledgment; and they desire to express their appreciation of the great ability which has enabled you, in so short a time, to accumulate and convey to the public such a large amount of information upon the geological character and various mineral resources of the province.

A series of photographed views of Nelson and the vicinity has been procured by the Government, which his Honour requests you to add to your collection, and regrets that more perfect ones could not be obtained.

I further do myself the honour to request you will be good enough to convey to Commodore Baron Von Willerstorf Urbair, the Commander of the Novara expedition, the thanks of the Superintendent and Provincial Government for his kind consideration in adopting such arrangements as enabled you to prolong your stay in New Zealand, and thus afford our province a special share of the benefit the visit of the expedition will confer upon the colony.

Wishing you, on the part of his Honour and the members of the Executive Government, a prosperous voyage and every future success,
