NOTICE.

IT IS HEREBY NOTIFIED that the following apportionment of the General Government Road Board vote for the current year, amounting to £1160, has been sanctioned:—

The following are the conditions on which the Grant will be applied:—

Each Road Board to levy Rates amounting to at least half the sum granted to it.

The Chairman of each Board to supply to the Provincial Treasurer a duplicate bank slip, showing the amount raised by rates, and paid into the credit of the Road Board; and provided the requisite amount has been raised and paid in, the Provincial Treasurer will pay to the credit of the Road Board the amount granted in five monthly payments, commencing in January and ending in May.

The Chairman of each Road Board to furnish accounts not later than the 30th June in each year, which shall be audited by the Provincial Auditor, and until such accounts are rendered and passed, no further sum shall be allotted to such Road Board.

Any Road Board not taking the necessary steps to entitle it to the Grant allotted to it, prior to the 1st March, 1878, shall forfeit the same, and such sum may then be distributed among the other Road Boards, provided they raise the necessary rates.
Road Board vote, is available, and the Government have sanctioned its distribution among the outlying districts of the Province not included in the Road Board districts, among which the £1160 is apportioned in terms of Clause 12 of the “Payment of Provinces Act, 1871,” which provides “That in outlying districts, in which it may be difficult or inconvenient to constitute Road Boards, voluntary contributions shall be deemed equivalent to money raised from rates.”
The following are the conditions on which the Grant may be obtained:—

The inhabitants of districts desiring to share in the Grant to make application to the Superintendent prior to the 1st March, 1878, stating the sum they desire to obtain and the works upon which it is proposed to expend the same, upon which the Superintendent will notify the sum that will be granted.

The inhabitants of each district to contribute One Pound for every Two Pounds granted.

A duplicate bank slip, showing the amount so contributed and lodged to the credit of the Road District at one of the banks, to be sent to the Provincial Treasurer, who will pay to the account in the bank the amount granted.

Accounts must be furnished not later than the 30th June in each year, which shall be audited by the Provincial Auditor, and until such accounts are rendered, no further sum shall be allotted.

In case the outlying districts do not take the necessary steps to entitle them to the grant of £666 13s. 4d. prior to the 1st March, 1878, the sum remaining unapportioned will be distributed among the Road Boards provided they raise the necessary rates.
The sums granted to Road Boards in Road Districts to be expended in terms of Clause 12 of the “Payments to Provinces Act, 1872,” viz., “The money appropriated to Road Boards under this Act shall be expended exclusively on the formation of roads, bridges, and other works of such kinds as shall be agreed upon as aforesaid.
Any constituted Road Board not included in the apportionment of the £1160 can share in the £666 13s. 4d. on application.
