Vol. X. WEDNESDAY, MARCH 3, 1869. No. 4.
NOTICE.
Vaccination Act, 1863.
The Vaccination Act, 1863, makes it imperative that the parent or others having the custody or care of any child born in New Zealand shall within six calendar months after the birth of such child take or cause it to be taken to some duly qualified medical practitioner for the purpose of having it vaccinated. The child must also be taken again on the eighth day following, for the purpose of ascertaining if the vaccination has been successful, when a certificate will be given to such parents as to the result of the operation. Non-compliance with either of the above renders parents liable to a fine not exceeding forty shillings.
If in the opinion of the medical practitioner the child is not in a fit state to be vaccinated, the operation may be deferred, always provided that when it is in a fit state of health the same penalty may be enforced by non-compliance with any notice the parents may receive.
The Act also applies to all children under twelve years of age who have not been vaccinated.
